Twofer Twofourties: 1990 Volvo 240

It is sad to see people give up on their hobbies, but this next sales is the case of something who is quitting his/her boxy Volvo addiction. Or maybe they are being sold to afford yet another fresh crop of boxy things from the local pick-a-part. Anyway, the seller’s loss is your gain, because two cars for $3k isn’t a bad deal in today’s odd used car market. Find these 1990 Volvo 240 (2 of them) offered for $3000 in Randolph, VT via craigslist. Tip from TeleArrow.

Nice find.
I still don’t get it. Do people really get excited about volvos like this? Isn’t this like collecting Dixie cups or something else that exciting?
Volvos of this era generally are really solid competent cars although “ needs some bodywork to pass inspection” gives me pause in this case. I’ve seen Vermont cars with some pretty casual bodywork, I get the impression that Vermont is where Massachusetts cars go to die.
They definitely aren’t the most exciting cars in stock well-used condition. But they are stout, RWD, easy to maintain, roomy, relatively safe, and so on.
Think of the 240 as a 4-cylinder sedan/wagon version of a Fox body Mustang, and you’re in the right ballpark. Volvo’s equivalent to the early 80s Ford Fairmont & LTD.
They are wonderful blank slates for all kinds of fun builds. A few really easy mods make them pretty fun street cars. Without too much of a stretch you can build them for rally, drift, drag, or road course use.
