Trusty But Slow: 1984 Subaru GL Hatchback
The 2nd generation Subaru Leone was sold in the USA with the somewhat lame and confusing “GL/DL/STD” badge on the back, but it shared a chassis with the BRAT and was known for its longevity in the face of basic commuting. An 80s Subaru won’t be the fastest car on the block, but it will always get you to your destination, even if you have to stop and smack the top of a carb a few times. Find this 1984 Subaru GL Hatchback offered for $1750 in Alexandria, VA via craigslist.
This example of the Subaru GL Hatchback looks like a decent deal for the asking price — miles are high, but rust and issues are low. Hard to believe that this car is 33 years old.

Flagged for removal…
yeah it was wayyyy to good of a deal to be true. In this condition they usually sell for more like $1,800
It was pretty easy to tell it was fake. No sub-$2k CL car uses a digital wipe for the plate…..the thumb is so much easier.
When I lived in the mountains of western NC I found one of these with a manual transmission and 4wd. It had a proper little transfer case and was such a time capsule. It popped up on CL one day about an hour and a half away while it was snowing. Jumped in my other Subaru and ran out and bought it. I kept the car for almost a year and then sold it for twice what I had in it. They're very capable, loads of fun,sip gas and for a ton of attention but still would not go everywhere that my 2002 Outback would go
