Thursday Twister: Pop-Up Head Lights
Time for a new twist on the Thursday Twister — this time we’ll play a game. We are going to compile a list of cars equipped from the factory with pop-up headlights, one at a time. I’m going to start off with my pick and then you can put yours under. HOWEVER, you can only list one car per comment. I wanna see how long the thread can get before you guys get sick of this game….and the winner gets a prize.
Rules:
1. Only one car per comment (be sure to hit the refresh button on your browser before you post in case someone else has posted since you loaded the page). Do not nest the replies, just reply to the main post — if you reply to someone elses comment it should be in reference to his comment and not a pop-up headlight submission.
2. You can post again, but only after someone else posts another car. (This will stop K2 Mystery Car from just posting EVERY SINGLE car with pop-up headlights in a rapid fire stream of consciousness).
3. The contest will end at a pre-determined (but un-disclosed) time (could be a minute, could be a month) — the winner will be the last person who has posted a valid pop-up car. A yet to be determined (and crappy) prize will be sent to the winner. Yay!
4. Special versions of other cars do not count (someone else cannot post the C5 convertible and get credit) but you can post a different generation of Vette with pop-ups. Exposed pop-up headlights are fine too, but those things gotta move when they are turned on.
5. No anonymous submissions — pick a name with the Name/URL dropdown.
Ready….Set…Start!
First up is the C5 generation Corvette, a magnificent automobile
equipped with a monster engine, 6-speed manual gearbox, and pop-up
headlights that you can pickup for dirt cheap.
Next…
NA Miata
Lotus Elan.
Lamborghini Countach

No worries! Looks like there's a bunch of great ones – and more to come! Too bad we broke the [img] tag capability. The pictures are the best part.

ask me how i know – a pickup truck rolled backwards into me at 0.01 MPH at a traffic light on a slight hill – no room for me to back up out of his way – the tops of the lights were jammed back into the hood a tiny bit, but enough to lock the hood shut – bring a can opener

Despite reports, I have never had pop-up headlights. I've owned several cars that had that feature, but my physique is quite normal. I believe the entry above, "K2 Mystery CarFebruary 19, 2015 at 11:29 AM", to be slightly incorrect…

We're doing prototype race cars now? That seems a little…uh, like you're stretching there, kaibeezy.
Don't think the Lamborghini Diablo VT Roadster has been listed…
Nor the Lamborghini Silhouette, I think.

Dodge Royal Monaco 76-78
I think there's some repetition going on, with "Mk 1", "Mk 2", Gen 1, Gen 2 and picking and choosing years. That's cheatin' folks!
rule 4 – "post a different generation"
I'm going to say that different generations count, but only because I want the game to continue into the wee hours of the night. Also, one-offs count, but they must be driveable. No clay model prototypes.

You have got to do a search, kaibeezy! You're repeating cars that have already been mentioned. The Montego was a good find, though. Nice one on that!

By me, I might add.
did you? – i swear i F3'd it
unless it goes by another name?
You're forgiven because it's really known as the Abarth-Fiat Scorpione. I posted that one about 6.5 hours ago.

You're right. That one was a stretch. DELETE!
yeah, but the Argyll is a fascinating car and story – glad it popped up here
i'll let you have that one, but no more fixies – Alfa Montreal notwithstanding

who's this guy?!
Condor Man. He is a super hero.
feh – we're busy here – K2 it's your turn
CondorMan might have painted headlight covers, so I change my entry to Lancia Montecarlo (Scorpion). Yeah, they move ever so slightly up from off position.
I'd seen something like that re the Scorpion/Montecarlo but couldn't find specifics.
Here they are "mid-flip"
And again here, lights on

I…must…resist…posting…concepts cars that never made it anywhere near production. Aw HECK. It never made it to production, but it's still worth mentioning the 1966 Duesenberg II.

yes, the spandex car was a stretch… ba dum bum – but so cool with the winking headlights

uncle! – may as well unload the rest of your list, i'm out of steam – vince, what has he won?
I want to see if any east coasters (or far east DT readers…anyone?) pick this back up in the morning.
~ What a great thread! Now is when we really need that 'Like' button!
I have more. Do I stop or keep going? Since I'm being punished for being enthusiastic and the rule to keep me on a leash is still intact, if nobody sets me free by posting…then I'm stuck. One last then (unless I'm allowed to keep going???). Pontiac Mera…but of course!
Well I guess mine is an honorable mention. The Fitch Phoenix. John Fitch was all ready to build more than his proto type when that damn book usage at any speed was published and the corvair was killed off. Thus Mr. Fitch's parts supplier was no longer building corvairs. I love this little thing and wish that they had built them as the proto type went for huge money after Mr Fitch passed away. blog.hemmings.com/?p=241851&refer=news
Stupid NEVER correct. That book is unsafe at any speed.

Ford GT70.
I can only continue with concepts, unless I think of something. Perhaps Zach/Kai has some more actual factual production cars
The game is no fun with concepts. Then you're getting into one-off cars that don't really exist and were never produced for the public. I love your faith in me…unless Zach/Kai is your pet name for me. Sheesh. Once again, I get ZERO STREET CRED.
I took it as a given that you had additional. But the rules stipulate one car per post, so someone has to allow you to move on.
And, for the record, the Ford GT70 was limited production.
You're right, w.neff! I shouldn't b*itch at you. Please keep posting concepts so that I can post production cars. I'll shut up about it.
Ferrari F355
I already entered this one above. 5:33 Timestamp. I don't mean to be rude, and I would like to see what else you have.
Aha! You're right, once again! I searched for "F355" and didn't see it listed. My bad. Thanks for the correction!

my computer is choking on this tapeworm of a thread – vince, if you're there, can you start up a new one so we can continue? – (also, maybe you can port over the comments after 200 where the photos won't load – some awesome cars in there) – or if no response, i say we hijack the RX7 creampuff thread 😉
Only problem with that idea is that you can no longer do a quick ctrl+F to see if someone else has posted a car yet, and if you want to check the old thread (this one), you're gonna have to choke on it anyway.
well, but i could leave it loaded in one tab, Ctrl-F check there, then go to the other tab, check there, then post – it's the slow loading that's getting me
This is beginning to resemble work…………I was distinctly told there would be no math.
I think it's clear that people are out of ideas. While I'm sure there are a few more out there, it's time to call time of death on this one, DT. The additions below are silly and repetitive at best.
Kaibeezy, are you going to do a list again? That was super cool.
Removing the concepts and unintentional repeats, we've surely got well over 200 cars on the list.
even that short list i made was a hassle – a real list should turn into a real post, with images for everything – big job – where's the intern?
Speak for yourself K2, I'm not out of ideas.

I think this whole thing is more interesting from the angle of which manufacturers are not represented and which types of cars aren't, either. Not a single minivan, if I recall, and I believe the only truck was the one I mentioned. I could be wrong about the last item, though. Please correct me if I'm wrong. I also think the number of cars with pop-up headlights that rotate into position sideways is interesting. Not a lot of those. Lastly, I miss pop-up headlights. They're a bit of ridiculous mechanical whimsy and we need more of that, not less.
BTW, I'm mad because Anonymous won. Foiled AGAIN!!!!! Damn you, Anonymous! *shakes fist randomly in the air*
I spent a bit of time digging into trucks, trying to think if there was a single one represented. I must've missed yours, K2. About the closest I could come is Optimus Prime, but he pops up some fists rather than lights, so I think that's even more of a stretch than the submarine Lotus listed above.

Jimmy – there's one up above.
Sorry Zach, I didn't mean to encroach. I think they look cool, till the lights pop up, then a little goofy…. LOL
Oh no, no problem – just went to look and see if the LX was different than the 530 I'd posted above. Quirky, cool little car.
I am not K2 Mystery Car. I will not add to the "Pop-up Headlights" thread (really, it's the partially or completed concealed, hidden or obscured thread.
I will not add the Kodiak.

DTers, kaibeezy was nice enough to port all of the comments that contain code that won't work over so that the img tags and YouTube links would work (a BIG shout out to kaibeezy!). It would be awesome to continue this conversation, but I think it would be great if we did what he's suggesting and continuing it in that blog post. You won't have to click "load more" to see the all of the comments, either. Unless we surpass 200 comments again, but I doubt we will. The blog post is "5k: Banana Cream Pie: 1984 Mazda RX-7", which appeared on Thursday, February 19, 2015. If you can't link on the text that I've hyperlinked above, here is the direct URL:

All Hail Kaibeezy!
Some of the greatest (and funny as all get out, but you had to be there) song lyrics ever written, for no particular reason…carry on!
All the things I'll never see
All the things I'll never be
All there is that's left for me
Is here in this eternity
Of isolation
The cavalcade, the jamboree
Of life I thought was meant for me
I never dreamed that it would be
Replaced by this eternity
Of isolation.
All the things I'll never see
All the things I'll never be
All my hopes are memory
All there is that's left for me
Is isolation.
