Thursday Twister: Hofmeister Kink
The Thursday Twister is back with another quiz set to expand your mind and drive you nuts at the same time. This week we are looking for cars with the Hofmeister Kink, and we aren’t talking about that viral video were the Hoff-meister gets kinky with a cheeseburger, we are talking about Wilhelm Hofmeister’s signature forward bend of the C-pillar.

To start this party, I’m posting this BMW 3200 CS (1962-1965), but specifically I am looking for more coupes/sedans/wagons with the Hofmeister kink/kick/knick.
Standard contest rules are as follows:
1. Only one car per comment (be sure to hit the refresh button on your
browser before you post in case someone else has posted since you loaded
the page). Do not nest the replies, just reply to the main post — if
you reply to someone elses comment it should be in reference to his
comment and not a pop-up headlight submission.
2. You can post again, but only after someone else posts another car.
3. The contest will end when K2 Mystery Car is happy with the size of the list.
4. One submission per generation of car.
5. Each car must be a running/driving car (no clay model prototypes) and
at least two must have been built of that particular car (no one-offs).
6. No anonymous submissions — pick a name with the Name/URL dropdown.
Ready….Set…Post!

It's very small, but the Kink is there at the back corner of the rear quarter window.

Welcome to "Invasion of the Giant Foci".
And I even clicked "Preview" rather than "Publish", but it seems like it published anyway. If I knew the secret code to delete my own message, I would do so.
DT, please remove that mess if you can.

Ok, deleted the original comment for you.
To check image size before posting, just open it in a new browser tab (using only the url of the image itself). You'll see pretty clearly if it's bigger than our site can handle.
Thanks CFlo. I did open the image in a new window. However, I neglected to then "click" in the image. My Firefox window scales for display, but when you click on the image, it resizes to actual size.
Kaboom! the Giant Focus appears!

I know it's not technically a car, but my transportation-appliance entry is:
(hate to shamelessly promote half my own vehicles in one post)
… A Prius?
[img] chargeandride.com/prius.png[/img]
Hybrids and electric cars are fair game as they aren't defined otherwise within the rules. I like the wheels! What do the "other half" consist of?
a dark grey 2014 Elantra SE and a 2006 Suzuki GSX-R 1000:
[img] chargeandride.com/suz.jpg[/img]
Oh, man – GREAT bike! I used to have an early 90s GSXR1100. It was also a fantastic bike. I don't know about yours, but mine was clearly built with the intent on removing every tiny bit of weight possible. I overtightened -by hand- the oil drain once and cracked the pan. Never had a similar issue with the VFR I had concurrently. But then, the 1100 was oh so much more fun to ride. Unless I had a long ride, that is. Then it was definitely VFR time, which was as comfortable as the GSXR was fast.
That Elantra is a surprisingly great deal for the money. The Koreans continue to bring it. Obviously, you don't drive them all (at once). Is one for your significant other?
I've had a few carburetor-fueled GSX-R's, and a few other bikes… Had a late 80s GSX-R 750, an early 90s 750, a 2003 1000 and a 2004 1000 before this bike, as far as GSX-R's go. Huge difference the fuel injection makes, even compared to the best flat-slide-equipped side drafts. I've got to say, the bikes have improved in comfort & ergonomics more than anything in the past 20 years. I rode mine on a 2000+ mile, 36-hour round-trip road trip to the southern states. Didn't hesitate to use the bike the very next day for running errands around town. I also had a similar problem with the oil drain plug, thanks to overzealous tightening by a previous owner. Besides the GSX-R's, I've also had a bunch of other great Japanese bikes like a 1985 VF700F Interceptor, '82 VF750S Sabre, and about two dozen UJM's of all shapes and sizes. The mid-1970's Kawasaki KZ900's have to be my favorites of those.
The Elantra was meant to replace my S.O.'s previous vehicle. She had a 2007 Corolla LE, and the Elantra serves admirably as a suitable replacement. Did a little research and found the Koreans to be a great value. My only complaint, the rear shocks being junk, was easily remedied with a set of KYB "Gas-A-Just" shocks.
With heated electric clothing, the bikes once served as my year-round commuter transportation. In NYC – brutal – I know. Then, slowly the Hilux became the commuter/daily driver on rainy and snowy days. Now, a Prius. Gotta say that, as a hybrid-electric it's very fuel-efficient when it comes to sitting in traffic for two hours straight.
I hear your pain, brother. My VFR was the last of my bikes, replaced by sports cars. Not quite the same and I still look wistfully when a bike goes by. But the time period where riding is comfortable without a lot of fancy gear in the Northeast is just too short for me. I stowed my NA for two months and I'm out driving it again today. I would've been hesitant to do that on my motorcycle.

BMW 1602
[img] motoburg.com/images/bmw-1602-01.jpg[/img]
Point of order – would, say, a 67 Camaro be too far a stretch of the rules?
I believe so. Like the Sonnet, there's a distinction between the lower angle being part of the fender (a "haunch", if you will) and not part of the pillar, as it was designed by Wilhelm Hofmeister. If a majority disagree with me, speak up!
[img] static.cargurus.com/images/site/2008/06/28/19/46/1967_chevrolet_camaro-pic-21806.jpeg[/img]
I think it has to be part of the pillar or almost every car would qualify…
+1
I haven't been commanded by El Jefe to police, only to indicate when I thought the Twister was all unraveled. But it occurs to me that it might be helpful to get feedback and potentially discuss/argue it out. Nobody wants negative feedback, but still; you can't learn from silence in this case. And, of course, it's not just my opinion that counts. What do you guys say, more feedback or just keep on trucking without comment?
Keep on truckin' seems to be the consensus. Just know that if I don't agree with your assessment, I'm putting the car in the Rule Benders list and not including that one in the Leader Board. I suppose you'll just have to argue your case at a later time.
By the way, there's a simple visual calculation to determine if it's a Hofmeister kink or not. Just saying, in case anybody was wondering… 🙂
Wow, that Camaro is quite the rule bender, but I like it…so…yes!! More the merrier, right?
It went on the Rules Benders list.

How's 'bout my '72 2002tii?
[IMG] i61.tinypic.com/bhktv5.png[/IMG]
Awesome car, Brent. My wife has a '73 in Golf yellow (not a tii however). There's one article in the Project Car section which you can find at the top in the DT menu bar.
We've mostly been driving it, doing minor fixes. But as a fellow '02 owner, what would you want to see from a project car series on one of these?
I have some plans already – but let me know!
Not sure what you mean by "project car series"? I agree with your ownership philosophy of driving and doing minor fixes. The downside of owning a totally pristine collector car of whatever type, means you will be reluctant to ever drive it. I have one of those (not the tii) and its life consists of being a garage queen.
We have several project cars between us DT editors that we sometimes write about for the site (and many more we haven't yet written about, of course).
Here's the link to all of the Project Car posts: Daily Turismo Project Cars
And here's the intro to der Schmetterling (the 2002's name):
dailyturismo.com/2014/06/project-cars-are-overrated-mrs-cflos.html
Brent- I disagree (only in a small part though). I like making them pristine and then driving them down to a # 2-3 condition. Still mechanically right, but with a 'restored patina' of daily use. Then, its up to the next guy to re-re-restore it back up to #1 and do it all over again. I think that has been a well stated philosophy of an ultimate car guru, swami Jay Leno. Who is probably (or should be) reading DT under some pseudonym that references some obscure steam engine part that the rest of us wouldn't notice
Okay, now I'm with you. I actually commented back in June on your der Schmetterling post. In terms of projects on an '02 you might want to profile as part of a series, I can suggest the following:
– upgrade to 5 speed (a very popular upgrade than many '02 owners have completed or are contemplating)
– relocation of battery to trunk
– rebuilding and powder coating of rear subframe
– suspension mods
Hope that helps!

Pillar is not defined by the rules. It goes, in my opinion.

I guess it's a German styling cue sort of thing. Just like how the rounded trailing edge of the rear door is arguably a Japanese one:

All the little cars have moved upmarket. They might have to bring back the Mazda Carol nameplate to make a car the size the Mazda3 or 323/Familia/121/Protege used to be years ago. Would you drive an Autozam?

Pfft, Hofmeister Kink indeed… should have been called the Bertone Kink. In any case, my thoughts on the dog-leg kinked C-pillar, as I call it:
In my opinion, BMW and Lexus have perfected it. Subaru and Nissan are trailing not too far behind. The perfect size is about 4 or 5 inches, hehe. The BMW's kink seems to be usually at a 45-60 degree angle, as seen on the E39. The Lexus usually has it at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the ground. Some have the kink completely made up of plastic garnish or sail panel, such as the 2001-07 Impreza/WRX and 2002-06 Altima. Some have the size formula wrong; the current Honda CR-V has a kink that is much larger. Likewise, some examples of cars that have a kink that's too small include the current Acura MDX, 2007-12 Lexus ES, and the Mercedes-Benz W204:

As boring of a product as the Camry is, they really did improve the design with this current generation. From some angles it looks like a junior Lexus, but with less of an angry Lemonsucker face (a good thing).

The rules still apply, so I've the first car on your list that meets the design criteria. But I'm not telling you which one! Cruelty, I know. Another of your cars is a repeat (of your own submission, no less) and that leaves only one other that could be submitted (the rest are Rule Benders), except you need another player to comment before you. This reply doesn't count and we'll let this one slide just because you're cool.
BTW, you are in the lead. But if a certain someone really puts his mind to it, he could steal the title from you. Cue dramatic musical flourish here.
"…apply, so I've added the first car…" My kingdom for the ability to edit just posted comments! Ah well.
By the way, did I ever tell you about my Uncle Max?
D'Oh! I thought it was an invitation to break the rules. Entrapment, I say!

Uncle Malibu Maxx?
Ha ha! You are forgiven for your impatience. I distinctly know the feeling.
I didn't see the 5th gen Malibu mentioned yet, only the 6th (Saturn Aura) and 7th (one of my prior submissions).
Then your doppelganger is at it again. He posted the Malibu as TRDsmith on March 13, 2015 at 9:01 AM. Check out my reply.
I'm giving the Left Coasters a chance to have their coffee and give it one last whirl. If there isn't any more activity, I'll call it and post the results around 10:00PST.
You, me and Gianni were a bit too dominant in these Twisters and it may or may not be discouraging DTers from playing. Even though I've taken a different role in this round, I still want to play as I'm sure you guys do too. I'd like to propose a handicap for us; something like I have to wait for 4 players to comment, while you guys have to wait for 3 or something like that. Otherwise, there's no way for our fellow DTers to win, given our collective enthusiasm – which should always be rewarded!
Yeah I think I will sit out the next one, so it doesn't become a contest of three.
I find that mighty admirable. At the same time, I think that idea sucks. You'll be shuttering your tremendous wealth of knowledge and that isn't good. Did I butter you up enough there? No, I think the answer is to reward and challenge the more aggressive players with a handicap. I've given it a bit more thought and I think adding a number of comments before a dominant player PLUS a time limit would satisfy a lot of issues. So, if nobody comments and you have a 3 comment requirement handicap, you'll be able to go ahead and add another one in, say, 3 hours if all has been quiet. Something like that. That way, you might end up kick starting the challenge again, while giving the less hardcore a chance at winning.
Or maybe a cap or only obscure cars
I hear you, but I think that's too limiting. Who will determine what is obscure and what should the cap be? It might be too low or too high.
I officially declare this Twister OVER! Fantastic job everyone!

So there are the leader boards, with and without the Rule Benders. If you only submitted one car, I have not included your username in the first list. For shame! Note that the first leader board does not include those cars that were included in the Rule Benders list. Again, please submit why you believe I’m incorrect and we’ll hash it out. If I miscalculated, speak up!
Okay, let’s all agree that the Hofmeister Kink (HK) is a tricky thing to define. We didn’t define it precisely at the beginning of this superb challenge and because of that; I’ve done my best to judge submissions with a grain of salt. Some of them are easy in that they have no relation to the design feature. Others are not so easy to decide whether they fit or not. Because of this and some of the adjustments to the results lists, I fully expect folks to argue the results I’ve come up with. And that’s just fine by me. Discussion is the whole point, really.
I do have some history with ye olde HK. After I went to film school, I realized toot sweet that getting into that business was more about who you know and not necessarily talented enthusiasm. So back to school I went, this time focused on design. I thought for a short period that I’d become an automotive designer but quickly realized that was so constricting that I would rather poke a sharp object in my eye and switched over to graphic design.
I did get through a couple of automotive design-ish classes (really, they were industrial design courses) and one of them required a paper. I chose to write a study of our old friend, the HK. At first glance, it’s a tricky thing that’s a bit hard for the human eye to fully define. But once you study it closer, as we have in this challenge, you see that it clearly follows some basic criteria. Besides the aforementioned bend in the bottom of the pillar (commonly referred to by the industry as the B, C or D pillar), the design also includes five discernable points (labeled in the image as A through E) that can be connected by lines. Sometimes those points are “soft” (curved) or they’re “hard” (sharp angles), but it’s not that important which. As you can see in the graphic, I’ve demonstrated such utilizing El Jefe’s choice of the BMW 3200 CS. Unfortunately, you’ll have to copy and paste the link due to Blogger limitations.

Some of you will surely spewing your coffee all over your monitor once you look at the list. How could your faithful fellow DTer (that’s me) not see the triangular bit that indicates the classic HK? I’m sorry to disagree with you, just having that bit does not satisfy the design critic (hey, me again!). On top of that, the design really needs to be in metal and glass. A good example of an HK-like design that actually isn’t in any way is the 2007-2014 Dodge Avenger. Chrysler added a black plastic triangle to enable the window to lower properly into the door. If you judge the design with that element, it passes the visual test (5 distinct points). But if you look at just the metal, you’ll see that it doesn’t (only 4 points, the top being a gentle curve that has no noticeable C point.
Who died and made me judge, jury and executioner? Nobody, that’s who. But somebody’s got step up here because nobody else volunteered! As some justification, I do present to you that my last corporate job (which was, admittedly, a long time ago) was Creative Director for an Amazon competitor. Prior to that, I was a Creative Director for a major science museum, as well as owning my own graphic design company for many years.
I particularly find it interesting the obvious brand loyalty and awareness that some DTers exhibit. Surely their breadth of car knowledge is larger and I challenge them to draw further from it in future challenges.
Another thing to note is the existence of so many other cars that utilized this design feature, before and after. BMW trying to sue people over it is not unlike them suing for using the color yellow; in other words it’s just a design that exists in the greater universe and it not unique to any one brand. But it should be noted that though BMW doesn’t ultimately own the trademark feature, it’s nearly inseparable from the brand and thus I’ve added every BMW to the accepted cars list, regardless of how vague it actually is. The argument could be made that other cars fit the criteria then and that’s another discussion point should you desire to address it.
It’s also safe to say that the HK is not a Germanic affection. Porsche, Mercedes and Audi seem to have gone out of their way to avoid it, regardless of it symbolizing rear-wheel drive or strength. Bolo was the only DTer to find a German car that had the HK.
So there, I’ve done my best my friends. Your feedback is welcome and the whole point!

i8 a rule bender? wut? Look at this and tell me you don't see the clear H-kink.

Did you get a chance to read my writeup? We're looking for 5 points and though I may need new glasses, I only see four. That's why it went to the Rule Bender list. But I broke my own rule in that all BMWs are just added to the list by default. So, here's your update!
Results
93. BMW i8
Leader Board
28 – TRDsmith
22 – Gianni
16 – Fleetwood T. Brougham
I must admit that I didn't quite realize your were both Fleetwood T. Brougham and FTB.
Forgot that Blogger won't display the image. I drew four points on the i8 window. Here's the link without the img tags.
Not sure I entirely agree about the Lexus RX being a rule bender, it has the 5 points you mention, I have illustrated them here:

Yes, if you include all three of the back windows then you are correct. That would be true of the 2nd and 3rd gen RX.
Ehhh, agree to disagree….usually the H-kink is just defined as a forward bend at the C (or D) pillar, but I'm not to worried about it. I was reading a BMW design article recently (that was focused on the i-cars), and they went to great lengths to explain that the H-kink was as integral a part of BMW design as the kidney grille, and that while they had included it with the i8, there was much hand wringing around leaving it off the i3 (well deserved hand-wringing, I might editorialize—what an oddly styled vehicle that is).
That was the main reason I stayed solely with BMW's for this little competition—-by BMW's own admission, almost (Z3 Coupe and the convertibles being the only outliers I can think of) every BMW since the Neue Klasse has included this design feature.
I fully hear you and hear where you're coming from. The specifics of the design are very confusing, to the point where the misconceptions about it are almost generically accepted. BMW has created even more derision over time by playing fast and loose with the HK. But that doesn't make it so, nor change the original brief.
I offered to discuss this in detail at the beginning of the challenge but was met with a total lack of interest. That's fine and that's why I created a Leader Board with the Rule Benders and without. So you might focus on the former if that makes more sense to you. Interestingly, it does not change who submitted the most cars so it doesn't matter from the viewpoint.
Here's the rub; because the triangular design feature is so universally misunderstood, it makes it nearly impossible to define the specifics unless they're laid out in black and white. Otherwise, you'd have to accept a car like the 1st gen Nissan Murano's third window as having an HK. And yet, nobody seriously looks at that car and declares it as having that (albeit hideously and dangerously exaggerated) design element.

This brings up another point that I left out of my truncated DT writeup; the HK existed before Hofmeister "created" it. There was no BMW HK when Cadillac released the 3rd gen Series 62 and it didn't arguably appear on any BMW until the 50s with the 501 (the A to B was really just a gentle radius).
As I detailed in my original paper on the subject, some sources even make the accusation that Hofmeister blatantly stole it from GM. And while he worked for BMW prior, Hofmeister's influence isn't really seen in the company's cars until 1961.
Muddy waters indeed and a potential living h*ll for the fool who volunteers to judge what is and what isn't the HK. I shall proceed to go punch myself in the uvula.
I recall reading your paper on the subject. It was quite long, if I remember correctly. Until then, I hadn't realized how complicated the subject actually was. As a former BMW owner, I just assumed that I understood it and that it was unique to the brand but stolen by others. Like my later disgruntled exit from brand loyalty, it turned out that I was incorrect in my assumptions.
Your struggles with your various 7 Series are legend in my mind, Bolo. It's certainly made me leery of the brand, though I wouldn't most likely be dealing with new or top of the line models, for sure.
And I must confess that I'm still reeling over the fact that BMW and Toyota are currently developing a sports car platform together. I guess Subaru has been thrown out with the baby water.
Really? What could Toyota possibly need from BMW? Since they've completely abandoned all of the things that made them great, what could Toyota get from them?
Yep. Weird, huh? The only thing I can figure is that they didn't want to give any money to the only other car company willing and able to challenge their global sales domination, VW (GM aside). Otherwise, why wouldn't they go straight to Porsche? I know that's what you did as an owner, right? They've already tried the lower end of the sports car market (Subaru) and the niche market (by selling engines to Lotus), so they turned to…BMW? Or maybe it was the other way around, I don't know.
Let's agree that both brands are not what they once were, from a driving enthusiast's perspective.

oops, didn't see that the whole shebang was over….(where the H did TRD get 37? it was neck and neck when I logged off on Friday!)
You snooze, you…are well rested!
And by the way, you guys are lucky I had guests in town this weekend and was away from the computer….there were at least 20 more BMW's I could have pulled out.
Our evil plan worked perfectly! Bwahaahaa.
