Thorsday Snow Day: 1990 Volvo 740 Turbo Wagon

This next car comes as a tip from TeleArrow who writes: Here’s a properly boxy Volvo for your Thorsday. I don’t know why I like the look of these things so much, maybe it’s because it’s what you would draw if you were 7 and asked to draw a wagon. This Turbo looks to be in decent shape. As always, wish it was a manual. Find this 1990 Volvo 740 Turbo Wagon offered for $5500 in Vermont via craigslist.

Selling my 1990 740 turbo wagon. Coming out of long term ownership. This car is rust free, with no modifications (except taillights) and lots of new parts.

Highlights:
Very rare car in this condition (these days)
Great useable investment
7 passenger
Sunroof
Great interior
Trailer hitch and wiringNewly installed: taillights, plugs, wires, oil change, all boost hoses, vacuum hoses, tires, windshield, window switches, door handles……
The overall condition is good. Lots of dings and scratches but no rust. Interior is good also…..worn from use but fully original and complete.
Car starts, runs, shifts and drives great. No smoke, plenty of boost and a good brake feel. Everything in the car works including the original radio, wipers, lights….. no warning lights on the dash. Inspected until next year. The car even has seat heaters (haven’t tried). The car also has A/C (not hooked up) and a trailer hitch.
Needs: car shows 177,000 miles but speedometer comes and goes. Probably over 200,000 realistically. Rear hatch trim is broken. Missing a rear facing seat buckle. Temp gauge slow to react. Timing belt is in good shape but I have a kit on order
$5500 obo trades considered

740 turbo wagons are wonderful cars, loved mine, but they pretty much suck in the snow.
You really need a dedicated set of snow tires and wheels if you want to use it in the snow.
Volvo actually had a dealer-available option from the manufacturer (not just a snow-belt offering) of four mounted/balanced snows on steel wheels relative to its heritage. Remember, they were the ‘safety manufacturer’ of the day back when.
My son and I bought almost exactly the same car as this one back in October. Great cars. Speedo, brakes, and rust seem to be the primary concerns with these. And living in Minnesota I budget $1,000 for snow tires and wheels any time I buy a car anyway. Haven’t had to for the Volvo yet but both of my other cars we have ’em (2007 328i and a 2006 A8).
