Thorsay Late Model: 2009 Volvo C30 T5 R-Design

The C30 was Volvo’s attempt at a proper premium hot hatch, built from 2007–2013 on the P1 platform shared with the S40/V50/C70 and related underneath to the European Ford Focus and Mazda3. The styling is the real hook: two doors, broad shoulders and that huge frameless-looking glass hatch, deliberately recalling Volvo’s 1800ES shooting brake. Today’s example is the one you want: T5 (2.5-liter turbocharged inline-five made 227 hp and 236 lb-ft) + R-Design + six-speed manual. Find this 2009 Volvo C30 T5 R-Design offered for $6000 in Seattle, WA via craigslist. Tip from Zach Z.

21.0 MPG city · 29.0 MPG highway · 24.0 MPG combinedSecond owner. I’ve had it since 2012. Bought it with 25,000 miles on it. An incredible car.
- Clutch replaced — I have put less than 1,000 miles on it since then ($4,000 job). It has been garaged in Kingston, WA since. All service receipts available.
- Has its blemishes as you can see on the last couple photos. Priced accordingly.
TRADE INFO — My Mom needs a car and she won’t drive a stick. Hoping to get her a reliable, vehicle, like a Honda Accord, or if you have an automatic C30 and want the 6-speed, reach out. My mom does love Mercedes (she had a 2006 that was totaled that she loved) so if you have an older model automatic with similar miles in good shape, let’s talk.

The C30 is increasingly difficult to find. A turbocharged European hatchback with plenty of personality, handles well, and is quick and responsive. It’s unique, compact with the strong five-cylinder turbo engine.

My preferred year for these, final year for the original, blockier front end styling, first year for the wide-spaced VOLVO lettering on the hatch instead of a badge on the handle, among misc. other minor improvements before the major facelift for 2010.
Since BMW Z3 coupe prices are getting absurd lately, these are my second choice for a “Harold Mod” — get one in black, tint the rear quarter windows as dark as the law will allow, and add faux landau-bar decals across them. I’d also swap in “Nordic Oak” bentwood-style interior trim pieces from a donor S40/V50.
Man, Vince, nary a tip from Zach tag to be found.
