The Last Great Saab: 1994 Saab 9000 Aero

The Saab 9000 was the final vehicle designed in house at Saab and brought to market by the funky Scandinavian OEM before it was fully acquired by the machine known as General Monster…errr Motors. The 9000 was built on a shared Saab/Fiat platform that was also used in the 1984-1998 Lancia Thema, Saab 9000, Fiat Croma, and Alfa Romeo 164. The Saab/Fiat Type 4 platform features executive class luxury, front drive safety, and Giorgetto Giugiaro styling…but the best part is that they are cheap and easy to modify to go fast, if you can find one. Find this 1994 Saab 9000 Aero offered for $4,800 in Brooklyn, NY via craigslist. Tip from FuelTruck.

1994 Saab 9000 Aero159k miles, 5 speed manual, NO TCS traction (that’s a good thing for these cars), 100% stock and never modified. The only non original item is the stereo. This model came with the much desired AERO seats, suspension, body kit, Super Aero wheels, and a TD04 turbo from factory.
Mechanically the car is great and very reliable. Engine is smooth and does not smoke. Clutch and transmission are perfect. Suspension is firm and tight. All brakes were recently replaced. You can drive it anywhere.
The best part…No Rust! This car spent its life mostly in Oklahoma and Oregon. Previous owner was a collector who shipped the car over from Oregon and kept it garaged in winters.

The dash top is cracked but easily replaceable. The top comes off separate from the rest of the dash. Overall the car has general wear consistent with its age.
The climate control needs attention. The temp is stuck on full hot. I have a feeling the temp control motor/servo is not responding.
These cars are extremely rare these days. Finding a rust free one is next to impossible. I purchased it pre-COVID and had great plans to restore it to new condition. Sadly the world changed and I don’t have the time or resources for it right now.
Clean NY title ready to be transferred.
If you see this ad its still available. Ad will be deleted when sold. I will not respond to emails asking if its still available.

Great cars. Have one with 108k mi on the clock. Need to love them and be willing / able to diagnose the overengineered bits that occasionally have issues (headlight relay on mine shorting the whole car out recently – http://saab9000.com/procedures/electrical/headlamp_relay.php – not complex to fix, but inconvenient when driving in Alaskan at night in the winter). Doesn’t appear to have any (or at least significant) issue with water sneaking between the windscreen and the surround (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zylGufaIEGw). Need to do the two hydraulic engine mounts on mine as they’re at the end of their run.
Does that also make this the last great Lancia???
By all accounts, the Saab version ended up modified quite far from the Lancia, Alfa and Fiat. This TopGear tribute to Saab explains – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bk5CTRu_Pzw (at 01:50)
The best Triumph ever? (What with the Saab 2.3 being an evolution thereof…)
Has anyone ever put this SAAB engine into a TR7? I mean, if it’s sort of the same engine and all, it would be a fun place for all that potential power.
You could get the Lancia version with a slightly detuned version of the Ferrari 308’s V8.
It is a shame these are so thin on the ground. The engines on these can make a silly amount of power for the money. The best highway car I have ever owned.
