Teal Deal: 1978 Ford Pinto Hatchback

The Pinto was released for the 1971 model year from an optimistic front office at Ford. It was intended to be a light and compact import fighter…but due to a design flaw in the fuel tank it ended up as a punch line in every joke involving fiery death for the next 3 decades. The Pinto is now almost 50 years old and they are all but gone from the streets…so what is a really nice example worth to you? Find this 1978 Ford Pinto Hatchback offered for $7500 in San Andreas, CA via craigslist. Tip from Matt V.

Doesn’t that same gas tank design flaw exist in the early mustangs where fuel cascades down into the rear passenger well If the tank is breached or punctured
I think the problem with the pinto is that there were bolts located so that the tank would get punctured in an accident, not so much that the tank was getting crushed and leaked. I have never heard of the mustang having this problem.
Boy, that’s a nice one. Slip and slide seats too!
is this an original color? I only seem to remember earth tone ones. that teal looks like something inspired by yellowstone NP thermal pool waters.
That half vinyl roof makes me wonder how a Pinto would look with a targa top. Didn’t realize they ever came with vinyl top option. I don’t think I’ve ever seen that color scheme on a Pinto, either, but I like it.
$7500 seems wrong for a dirty looking, worn out stock pinto, even with the cool radio active looking color. We’ve seen much better deals lately.
“so what is a really nice example worth to you?”
Not $7,500!
