This next car comes as a tip from Matt C who writes: “Not for the faint of heart – a late Loony Labor Day truckSo it’s $1000 for a truck that doesn’t run with bodywork pieced together out of scraps. But is it EVER pieced together out of scraps! The main body is an early […]
The 4th generation of Chevrolet’s C/K series pickups added where the previous generation left off — not with speed or performance or style, but in ruggedness, usability, and haulability. The only homage to style could be perhaps the step side bed, which gives the owner a square bed at the expense of a few spare […]
Modern pickup trucks are huge — not just in length but also in girth and width. Today’s next car might not have the ginormous from grill of a new Silverado, but it has length in spades. Four doors and a long bed in a 3500 series GM pickup truck makes a long wheelbase Escalade look like a Miata. We featured a chopped Silverado the other day that was generally appreciated by the crowd for being tidy and subtle modification. However, today’s next feature is anything but understated. It does appear to be a decently conceived 4 seat convertible pickup truck conversion, which is not something you hear very often. This is not a car that the average person will notice. Most people will walk right by and I have no idea of the amount of work that it takes to get a nice looking 4″ chop out of the top of something like a Silverado. And it is almost hard to tell that this has been modified, but the A-pillars, the B-pillars, the windshield, side windows, door frames, and the back window are all custom. And, I’m not a big fan of chopped trucks, and this may be the answer to a question that nobody asked, but it works — it adds just the right amount of special to the otherwise plain Silverado. The Mercedes-Benz OM606 inline-6 was the ultimate version of the indirect-injection diesel passenger car engines that pushed oil burning Mercedes-Benz diesel sedans, coupes, and wagons around the world for decades. It isn’t as complicated as later Benz common-rail diesel engines, but the 3.0 liter 175 horsepower turbodiesel came into the world before the ill-fated Daimler-Chrysler alliance and it featured a reliable Bosch electronically controlled diesel injection pump that should last for a million miles. Today we find it installed into a Chevrolet Silverado…which is a strange place to find an OM606. Personally I’d be tempted to run a semi truck style exhaust with a rain flap on top…but I’m probably not the person you should follow when it comes to automotive things. America’s obsession with the giant pickup truck started many years ago, back when gas was cheap and safety was a consideration that was second to most…but gas is still cheap when adjusted for inflation and safety is still something that people struggle to understand. So enjoy the good old days with this good old pickup. […]

The Silverado name first appeared on the side of a Chevy pickup in 1999 on the replacement for the 75-98 Chevrolet C/K pickup, but there were two different versions of the Silverado. The first is a light duty version that could be purchased in 1500 and 2500 versions, but there was heavy duty version that […]
Geeks around the world celebrate May 4th (and its groan inducing pun) as Star Wars day with a commemoration of all things that were great associated with the original trilogy (Ep 4,5,6). We will not speak about the intolerable abomination that was Ep 1,2,3, but instead join in the fun with this tailgate mural’d 2005 […]
