There is an old saying; if you can’t beat ’em, join ’em. That’s sort of the way I feel about the Baja-everything movement. Sure, it started with Beetles back in the day, but then they started putting big wheels and lift kits on Firebirds, BMW Z3s, Miatas, Crown Victorias…where does it end? Let the apocalypse commence, I’ll be ready. Maybe with a W126 S-class? Find this 1982 Mercedes-Benz 300SD W126 offered for $4000 in Highland, CA via craigslist.
The W116 chassis Sonderklasse (S-Class) is known for its low buy-in price, incredibly durable interior materials, tank-like build quality, and stately appearance. We old school car nuts will laud the durability of the aging Benz, but even I don’t believe that a 43-year-old German car will be as trouble free as a few year old used Kia. However, this next car is a Euro import, which means it has all of the plusses of the US Market S-Class, but with smaller DEATH-TO-ALL bumpers and sealed beam DEATH-TO-ALL headlights. And probably a non US-Emissions compliant DEATH-TO-ALL inline-6. At least this car is over 25 years old, so US Dept of Homeland Security will no longer stop you from buying/owning/driving this literal rolling tomb on the street. Enjoy your premature death! Find this 1978 Mercedes-Benz 280S W116 offered for $5,200 in Worthington, OH via craigslist. Tip from Cory.
This next car comes as a tip from Jeff who writes: I love depreciation… especially with Euro vehicles. Another great example with good miles and in awesome shape. Not bad for 500+ hp but the age old question looms… you can afford to buy it, but can you afford to maintain it? (that is the […]

Think about what you can buy for $20k these days: a base-model sedan like a Dodge Dart or Ford Focus, a decently nice high-content econobox like the Honda Fit, or the chunk of pure Stuttgart Bracq bossitude that is the W108 sedan. Granted, most W108s trade for far less than $20k, so for that price […]

Happy Father’s day to all you with kids, or pets that look like you, or both! We thought it would be interesting to ask our readers what they would get their Dad from the automotive world. Before having kids, my father used to drive such classics as an MG TF, 49 Ford, Chevy Vega, but […]

The W140 generation S-Class was built from 1991 to 1998 as the flagship Mercedes-Benz luxury vehicle. The S-Class was available as a sedan, long wheelbase sedan and coupe. Continuing the tradition of confusing nomenclature, the S-Class coupe was badged the CL even though it shared nothing in common with the C-class, (or its variants; CLK, […]
