This next car has me confused. Is it a Vette? Wait…it’s not a C3 Corvette. It is a kit car made to look like a C3…but why would someone build a C3 Corvette kit car…when they’re not expensive to buy and haven’t been since a few years after they left the showroom. It would like wearing a fake version of a Casio watch…if you are going to spend the time to make fake watch, make it a Rolex or a Patek Philippe…but this is a 2 liter Ford Cortina powered kit that looks like a C3 and is…somehow…slower. How? What? I’m not saying I wouldn’t want to drive it for the LOLZ…but what is the point? Find this 1972 Lightning TS offered for $10,000 in Poughkeepsie, NY via craigslist. Tip from Rock On!
They called it a factory sport truck, but the first generation SVT Lightning was a bit more than a few stickers and some interior bling. It was built to compete with Chevy’s 454SS and had a special 240 horsepower version of the 351 Windsor under the hood, but it had some tricks up it’s sleeve when it came to the twisty parts, thanks in part to legendary F1 driver Jackie Stewart. It wasn’t just a spring/shock setting, the Lightning also used thicker F250 4X4 sourced frame rails and additional welded gusseting to increase chassis rigidity and make it stick to the pavement. Color matched bumpers, lower ride height, and blacked-out trim completed the look and with production limited to 11,563 units over 3 model years means the Lightning will be a future collectible. This next truck comes as a tip from Matt C who writes: Came very close to asking the seller about this one myself, but didn’t have room to keep a truck this big until first gen Lightnings are worth real money. I wonder if I’ll be kicking myself for passing this up in a decade or […]
The first generation Ford Lightning pick up truck was marketed as a Mustang GT with a pick up bed. The good folks from SVT worked their magic on a F150 and created a muscle truck complete with a brawny 5.8 engine and suspension make over. The 1993-95 Lightning was not particularly quick new (definitely not […]
For this week’s Thursday Twister, it is time to name your favorite special edition of a mass market car. My choice is the SVT Lightning version of the Ford F-Series, which started off as a minor performance package in 1993 and ended up with as a supercharged street menace before being replaced by the Raptor. Find this […]
The ultra wealthy new rich are known for eclectic taste in cars. There is a DJ, who is rich beyond belief (the hard part to believe isn’t the measure of his wealth, but that a DJ could ever make more than a few bucks?? Really…a DJ?), who owned a Ferrari 458 Italia and then later […]
The ninth generation of Ford’s legendary F-series pickup was the first to get its own hot rod version — the SVT Lightning. It was an attempt by Ford to offer a special version of the F-150 for hauling ass instead of hauling logs, and the handling was developed with the assistance of ex-Formula 1 and […]
