I got this next link from prolific tipper Rock On, who put in the subject; Cheap City Runabout. And I thought to myself; this must be something cool and kooky like a Subaru 360 setup to run on camp fuel, or an El Camino’d Gillig Phantom Bus, or a Honda City Turbo II…but no. To my shock, surprise, chagrin, and sobering mortification…it was a Toyota Prius. The anti-fun car. The car that everybody loves to hate. The car that even radical Hummer torching environmentalists agree is a blight upon the planet…the Prius. Hmmm. But if memory serves me correctly, there was a time when everybody hated the VW MicroBus and now they are worth more than the average hippie’s 401k, so maybe the Prius will eventually get a cult following and…nah. This next car isn’t going to win any beauty contests, or any drag races…but it could get you a trophy for fuel economy. The first generation Insight is one of the only hybrid vehicles to get a manual gearbox and today’s example is offered for dirt cheap (and no, it is not the same red Insight we featured a few weeks ago) Grab this 2001 Honda Insight offered for $2000 in San Jose, CA via craigslist.
The first generation Honda Insight is an early Japanese gas-electric hybrid that features the strange combination of lean-burn engine, a 5-speed manual transmission, extruded aluminum monocoque construction and a sub-1900 lb curb weight…except this example has the optional CVT-auto transmission, which means it won’t have the same snick-snick Honda shifter feel, but how hard could it be to swap in a 5 speed and maybe a K20. Find this 2003 Honda Insight offered for $1995 in Los Angeles, CA via craigslist. Tip from MikeD.
You’ve heard all the negative stuff on the internet about the Porsche 928. It was faster backwards than forwards, it is the German Camaro, it is styled like a suppository, it is as reliable as Mariah Carey’s monitor… ENOUGH! The 928 is a great car, and it only gets better when you put in some […]
by K2 Mystery Car — Blanche placed the plate down in front of her husband with a flourish. “I made you your favorite meal dear; ribeye steak with a side of shoestring fries. I hope you like it!” Nodding his head enthusiastically, Frank picked up his knife and fork and gave her a huge smile. […]
If you thought that Top Gear UK’s Hammerhead Eagle i-Thrust had the market cornered on hybrid electric-internal combustion vehicles with flimsy sheet metal that will decapitate you with poorly deburred edges…guess again. In the late 70s and early 80s a small electric van manufacturer under the of name Marathon Electric Vehicles Inc produced a few […]
A late model Japanese hybrid featured on Daily Turismo? Okay, okay, put away the pitchforks, we haven’t fallen asleep, gone mad or been bought out by a Malaysian Venture Capitalist firm. This green hybrid is the “Mini Cooper” of Eco-friendly rides, sports a 6000 rpm magnesium block lean-burn engine, a 5-speed manual transmission, extruded aluminum monocoque […]
