The Porsche 968 is not the prettiest Porsche to be built in the 1990s, but it is one of the rarest. And that means something in the cult or Porsche, or it should. The fact is the 968 is still a hidden gem in the front-engine water-cooled Porsche experience and it will be worth something someday. But for now, they are cheap. I have to admit that I’ve had a soft spot for the front-engine water cooled Porsches from the 70s/80s/90s for a while…or maybe that’s a soft spot in my head…I dunno. What I do know is that my head would enjoy the California sunshine when I’m cruising around in one of the prettiest cars ever to come from Stuttgart and of the 2248 convertibles that were imported into North America between 1992 and 1995, this isn’t a bad way to go. There is a cricket living in my home office right now. Okay, it is not a home office, it is the garage, and I assume it is a cricket, but it is certainly some hemimetabolous insect that is part of the suborder caelifera (aka the grasshopper). He is quiet during the day, but in the evening when I’m enjoying a libation and drafting some witty words for DT, that little stridulating bastard starts rubbing his legs together to find a mate. It is loud. Screeching. I’m ready to leave my garage office and do business from the inside of a Toyota Prius…no…even better, I would live inside this next car if it would guarantee me a few moments of silence from the 65-75 decibels of Previa-esq supercharger scream that has been pounding my ears for the past week. Find this 1993 Porsche 968 offered for $14,500 in New Jersey via craigslist. Tip from Cory.
About two months ago, I was chatting with a friend who works in the same industry as myself at a regional trade show. His house was under contract for sale and in addition to moving the contents of the house, he only had two weeks to get rid of his Porsche 968 before the closing […]
At the moment, early 944’s are probably the biggest bargain of the Porsche brand. You have a sweet looking car with a only a 143 hp 2.5 4 cylinder engine to haul around about 2600 lbs and are stuck with the less attractive pre-85.5 dash layout. It is fairly common to find Chevy LS swapped […]
The Porsche 968 was the ultimate version of Porsche’s infatuation with watercooled transaxle equipped front-engine cars starting with the 924 and 928 back in the 1970s. Values are on the uptick as the market for sub $20k Porsches has been entirely vacated by the aircooled 911 which values each headlight at around $20k, so buy […]
Porsche’s largely forgotten final iteration of the Volkswagen-derived 924/944 platform, the 968, has caught our attention here on DT about 10 times so far. Why? Because it was the final version of an undervalued bloodline, the most refined iteration of a long lasting model, and the last front-engined Porsche before the Cayenne started dominstrating all […]
By Glenn — Okay…I am just going to come out and say it…water cooled transaxle Porsches are the next big thing. Long considered the black sheep of the family, recent market activity tells me these oft overlooked water pumpers are about to come into their own. Limited edition specimens like the RS & Club Sport […]
