Survivor Class: 1976 BMW 2002

The ragged and crusty 2002 we posted last week (plus the stealth fighter version) got me thinking that there has to be a better way to pick up a classic BMW New Class, perhaps with a lower chance of getting tetanus or hep C.  And then it hit me…get a 1976 example…at least if you live outside of the grip of the California smog laws.  Find this 1976 BMW 2002 here on eBay bidding for $3,150 with 1 day to go, located in Salem, OR.

If you read our New Class market update from 2014, you will know that the BMW 1500/1600/2000/2002 is one of our favorite classics that can be picked up for about $5k.  Sure, you could spend something in excess of $30k for a tii version if you enjoy overpaying for stuff, but save the price of a new economy sedan (or 10 cheap drivers) by buying a basic 2002.

The 1976 model 2002 is powered by a 2.0 liter M05 inline-4 that puts out 100 horsepower into a 4-speed manual transmission.  Don’t expect to win drag races versus any modern car, but the chassis and engine make a nice combination for a back road or light track day.

This is a sporty bargain if it sells for anywhere near the current bidding price, and those diving board bumpers can indeed be swapped for the skinny pre-74 versions with a bit of elbow grease and the right parts.
