Stella Polare: 1993 Cadillac Allanté

The Cadillac Allante (Allanté) was another attempt by one of the big three cash in on the allure of the European import; think Chrysler TC by Maserati or AMC Eagle Premier — but with an accent in the name causing grief for search engines and web indexing in the future. Zut alors! Oh wait. It is Italian. Così è la vita. Anyway, this is the last year of Allante production which means that it has the desirable Northstar V8 instead of the early boat anchor HT V8s. Find this 1993 Cadillac Allanté offered for $4999 in Seattle, WA via craigslist. Tip from Clay.

Holy dashboard buttons, Batman!
my dad worked for IBM- the military contractor side of their business. there was 1 open house for his plant in my lifetime. early 1980s. i got to see some of his work on the IBM avionics added into Sikorsky helicopters intended for keeping “sitting duck” naval carriers from getting hit by cruise missiles: install the radar in the copters so they could see beyond the curve of the earth. then needed their adaptive avionics to make sure these choppers could take off and land in any conditions from those carrier decks. IBM also provided Seahawk variants with high speed, just above water, search & rescue capability for missions in any (treacherous storm driven high) seas. and with hostiles around. He showed me how each knob the pilot might need to adjust had a different shape, so they could be detected by touch in zero light. The absolute polar opposite of the GM design brief for this ride.

That’s sort of an alligators to avocados comparison don’t you think?
Well, if all 3 were people, they’d all be answering phone for the Fromage-a-thon…
Wikipedia backs up one of the crazy things I remembered hearing about these
“The Allanté incorporated an international production arrangement that was similar to the early 1950s Nash-Healey two-seat sports car. The Allanté bodies were designed and manufactured in Italy by Pininfarina[2] and were shipped 4,600 mi (7,403 km) to the U.S. for final assembly with domestically manufactured chassis and engine.[2] Specially equipped Boeing 747s departed from Turin International Airport with 56 bodies at a time,[2] arriving at Detroit’s Coleman A. Young International Airport about 3 miles northeast of Cadillac’s new Hamtramck Assembly plant, known as the “Allanté Air Bridge”.
Seems like a surefire way route to high profit margins!
