Spy vs Spy: 2008 vs 2011 Chevrolet Tahoe PPV
Starting with the 1997 model year, Chevrolet offered a 9C1 police option on the GMT400 chassis that included parts from the defunct 454SS pickup to help cops catch the bad guys. This eventually turned into the Police Pursuit Vehicle (PPV) package that was added to 2WD Tahoes for high speed police pursuit action. Today we are playing a game of Spy vs Spy, and you get to pick your favorite: this white 2011 Chevrolet Tahoe PPV here on eBay
for $13,950, or this black 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe PPV offered for $13,800 here on eBay
.
If you want to play beat cop, you can pickup a P71 Crown Victoria, Dodge Charger, or Chevrolet Caprice, but if you want to drive around like you are some kind of Fed or a skinny wisecracking detective from that Law or Order show, you should get a police SUV. But not the Ford Explorer – that would be a good car for your kids – no, you need a full sized monster Tahoe.
First up is the white cop wagon, a 2011 model year ‘Hoe with a 5.3 liter Vortec V8 good for 320 horsepower and 330 ft-lbs of torque. The SUV looks in good shape with only 92,000 miles on the odometer, still has the front basher bumper, and as a bonus includes what looks to be the perp-partition from its days as a paddy wagon — perfect if you have an unruly dog or children.
The black Tahoe is also in decent shape given the 125k miles, and what it lacks in front bumper guard, it makes up in pure darkness of its…ok, not quite black, but original blue metallic paint job. There is some utility belt wear/tear on the driver’s seat bolsters, but you probably won’t notice it once you are suited up as the Batman and cruising around town.
For your money, which would you buy, black or white?
Gotta be the black, whoops, blue metallic one. No one is going to be intimidated by a big, white, SUV. And that front basher would not be a good idea in a crash, since it eliminates the crush zone in the front. Dark is always more badass.
The Blue one definitely looks better. If they had removed all the equipment and detailed the white one maybe it could be a contender but like some craigslist sellers the state of Michigan seems to really not care.. And being from Michigan it probably has been exposed to severe winter and some road salt, the blue one would have never seen. So I would choose the blue one…
Or do you hold out for one of the zillions of Copsplorers that Ford's been selling and will start to hit the market in a couple years?

No more coffee there…….
Mmmm… bull bars are so dreamy. That topic really needs to be explored one day. I'm tempted to bolt one onto the wife's Mazda Tribute, but I'm afraid she might notice.
Lousy gas mileage and an unparalleled opportunity to exploit ones not so hidden authoritarian impulses……….what's a wannabe to do? Go with the white one….more cop stuff!
The bull bars instantly make me think police, so if that is the image you want, might as well get one with it already installed.
Definitely the white one. Who cares about fuel use because aren't you really just buying the convenience of having cars magically get out of your way when you come up on them in the left lane!! That cost can be calculated on a cost/mile basis, but the smiles/gallon for stress reduced runs on crowded highways is a definite offset.
I have to wonder what the net mileage effect of those comically small tires is on these. I assume that this size is used to help these monsters get up to pursuit speed as fast as possible but there must be a MPG trade-off. As for the color, they have all sorts of colors in play down here in FL; white and black are the most common but I've seen the Vive la Resistance! blue, hunter green, charcoal…all with the requisite cop tint and hidden strobes. Bull bar is a dead giveaway so most don't have them.
4 speed vs 6 speed…both active fuel management…I'd go white. Check those 'idle hours' too.
Can't believe that Woodie Man uses Alfred E Newman's mug as an avatar and didn't say anything about "the usual gang of idiots." Am I the only one who loved the dialog free Spy vs Spy in Mad magazine when I was a kid 50 years ago?
The photo of the white one manages to include a heretofore unseen by me "thing not to do when photographing a car for an ad"
n) Don't park in a curb cut so that it looks like all your tires are flat.
Here is a nice blue PPV What state highway patrol uses cars painted French Blue ?
Don't give a Damm for the whole state of Michigan, the whole state of Michigan, the whole state of Michigan . Btw, I'd take the dark blue hoe.
The very coolest thing about Michigan; those HUGE red light domes on the roof. As bad as my eyes are, you can see those 1/2 mile away. I always figured they were put there to give observant drivers a reward/pass for paying attention.
Id actually go with the white one. And id put a ski rack on it and drive 30 in a 35 and watch everyone stay behind me.
For enhanced effect, roll down the window, throw out a doughnut and speed off!
PS.. Cops take the ugh out of donuts.
I love jake m 's idea…. We are now in the white car with white reflective paint so any white car could be a cop car…. The white Tahoe would make my day soo much better! Smiles per miles has got to be high on that one!
