Smurfboard: 1974 SAAB Sonett
Why do I keep thinking about and searching for cheap old Saabs? You’d think that with the Draken gone (yes, someone picked it up the other weekend — I need to do a full write-up) I’d be totally done with old front drive Scandinavian classics…but I’m not. Find this 1974 SAAB Sonett offered for $5,000 in Spring Hill, KS via craigslist. Tip from RyanM.
The first thing that jumps out about this car is the color. It is a shade of blue that you don’t often see on modern cars, and I love a good blue or green on a car. Far too many cars on the street today are grey/silver/champagne, or some shade of boring red — nobody buys cars with cool/wacky colors.
This is a Sonett III, so that means the 2-stroke oil burner was no longer an option (shame, that would be the one to get IMHO) and it is powered by a V4 borrowed from the European Ford Taunus. The V4 displaces 1.7 liters and puts out 65 horsepower to a 4-speed manual gearbox mated to the front wheels.

Having instructed at the Brae Burn Golf Club School of High-Performance Valet I can attest the seats as being the closest thing to a low-budget go-kart in a DOT-endorsed vehicle; aka soap box derby-ish. Today, I adore it's uniqueness before mainstream-marketing 'masses-of-asses' infiltrated our common passion.
