Schnell und Wütend: 2001 BMW M5 E39

The original BMW M5 was released in 1986 an autobahn cruiser that was only available in black like a Ford Model T, but unlike a Model T, it was monstrously fast. The next generation also featured an upgraded version of the BMW inline-6, but it wasn’t until the 1999 release of the E39 generation M5 that it got an appropriately menacing V8 to tear up the streets. This next car has been modified and the seller claims to have removed 400lbs of worthless weight. Find this 2001 BMW M5 E39 offered for $13,900 in Encino, CA via craigslist.

My 2001 e39 M5 is up for sale.
The car has a clean title and 184,000 miles.
I would say my M5 is one of the kind in mechanical order as well as esthetically. Looks like a beast and drives like a monster. Super fast and sounds incredible! Great car and I’m sadly have to part with it. This car is going up in the value right now crazy, in a few years it’s going to be worth a looot of money, so this is a good investment and a great weekend car!
I have worked on taking 400lbs. of weight out of it in order to make it less of a luxury auto and more of a nimble track focused car.

I was just reminded of the reputation the E39 M5 has earlier today by this super weird article comparing it to a 2020 Camry TRD.
https://www.autotrader.ca/expert/20201102/2020-toyota-camry-trd-vs-2001-bmw-m5-comparison-test/
That is a truly strange comparison. Its like comparing a cold leftover meal from a good restaurant to a TV dinner.
It’s a big leap for sure. The while concept kinda reminds me of having a friend who’s really into EDM music or something and tries to give turn you on to some music you don’t really like and is surprised by your reaction because the song has the same BPM as one you like. Yes there are similarities, but maybe they’re not the important things (like having a v8, manual transmission or RWD)
Ad written by a moron (don’t “waist” his time), probably all cludged up with impossible to tune modifications. Sparco racing seats. What could possibly go wrong here?
Yeah yeah, call me when an e60/e61 with the v10 shows up. Oh, and make it a wagon please.
That v10 doesn’t just wake the dead, it invites them over for a beer and maybe a Ramones concert.
And because a v10 wagon is only outclassed by a v10 Espace.
Tried to leave this comment the other day, but couldn’t log in. The owner is delusional for sure given these statements.
“This car is going up in the value right now crazy, in a few years it’s going to be worth a looot of money, so this is a good investment and a great weekend car!”
Maybe appreciating if left stock, but certainly not with the ‘upgrades & mods’ present here.
I love it when an owner of a listed car comments on here and especially when the car was owned by a DT reader.
I built the car how the current seller is representing it. I had picked it up for pretty inexpensive and built it into the M5 I wanted. Yes, it is typically in poor taste to do what I did to a e39 M5 but I didn’t feel bad doing it to a high milage car. The weight reduction really brought the car to life, it was very fast. My father and I had a really nice trip up to laguna seca last year. It was a very well sorted car, the S62 is an amazing engine.
Having a m5 was a bucket list car for me, I really enjoyed it. Now I am shopping for a inexpensive v8 vantage. Cheers to the new owner of my old car.
This is crazy. It for sale again, I think from another owner and some how it has been taken back closer to stock. I don’t know how someone did it. I had done things to this car that I felt were irreversible. I guess most of the weight was added back. This thing is being horse traded lol

That is quite bizarre.
The only thing I can imagine is that someone had another similar car and did a mix and match of parts and is selling off the unwanted parts in the form of a car.
It would be interesting to check the serial numbers of the engine, transmission etc.
I love how the current owner who has had the car for maybe 2 weeks says with confidence: ” I do oil changes frequently at about the 4k mile mark.” Sure. Yes.
I can’t quite read what that sticker on the left end of the hood says…but you might be able to trace the donor “stock” hood to some custom build that got wrecked.
Good stuff — Sean, thanks for commenting on this and keeping us in the loop.
Hey guys,
Haha yes so weird, and to be quite honest I have no idea how they put it back together. I pulled out all the stereo equipment, cut butchered harnesses, claened out stuff. I think there must have been a wrecked parts car to build this. I know the stock form is “more valuable” but it was so good when it was a light heavy-weight. The other funny thing is I bought it for $7,500 lol.
Today I am going to pick up my new sleeper. A 535xi wagon with 400hp. It is a monster.
