Say No To Hump: 1968 Oldsmobile Toronado

There are a few things that make up childhood memories (or trauma?) more than road trips from back when road trips always involved breakdowns and cross country driving with the windows down. If you were lucky enough to have a bunch of siblings, there was the issue of seat position…and NOBODY wanted to sit on top of that blasted transmission hump. It was bad enough to not have an arm rest, but even worse to deal with the knees if your face position of the middle seat (front or back) on top of that hot transmission hump. And woe to that kid who lost the sleeping position battle between the sunny parcel shelf, comfy seat cushion, and the lumpy floor. Kids with minivans and mandatory seat belts don’t know how good they have it. However, if you had parents who loved their middle children back in the 60s/70s, they’d have purchased a front-wheel-drive Toronado that came with a flat floor for ultimate 3rd (or 4th) child comfort. Find this 1968 Oldsmobile Toronado bidding for $6,150 reserve-not-met located in South Range, MI via ebay motors.

My first thought is “no one wants a coupe to transport the kids” but it was a different time, no child seats (or seat belt usage), and we all just kind of piled in willy-nilly. I could see being in the car, my Dad at the wheel with the electric window cracked to totally let out all the cigarette smoke, lol.
I heard others argue the exact opposite. i WANT a 2 door for the fam. once loaded in , and held in the rear by my seatback,, i know the kids are not opening doors while we are underway.
That is why dad always bought a 2 door wagon if possible!
Love it. The lines + the wheel covers just screams cool/unique.
This proves Oldsmobile could not improve upon the 1966 design.
As I recall these have room for all sorts of humpery.
