Safari Ready: 1974 Volvo 142

If you find a true boxy Volvo fan they will tell you a few things. First, the 140/240/740 is the best car to have ever been built because it can be a: daily driving sedan, family wagon, race car, driftersporty 2-door classic, custom wagon, autocrosser…I think you get the picture.  But today, we’ve got a special treat for you, a safari ready box.  Find this 1974 Volvo 142 offered for $2,700 in Mobile, AL via craigslist.  Tip from Zach.

From the seller:

This car was designed for someone who wants to go places. It doesn’t
matter the place, because obviously this thing is going to get you
there. Remote cabin getaway? DONE. Beachside party spot? DONE. Opposing
lane of traffic divided by a median, curb, ditch, or anything less than
concrete wall? DONE and DONE. It will go ANYWHERE, just as long as
you’re not trying to get there in a hurry. The car is a 4 speed manual,
which means anything above about 65mph is pretty much not going to
happen. The car will go faster than that, but it sounds like a
combination of acid jazz and your parents making love…you just really
don’t want to deal with it.

Ewww…

Under the hood is the original B20 overhead valve 4-banger that is fed with a single Weber carb and upgraded with a more aggressive cam and electronic ignition.

The interior is ratty, but if you want to live the rally dream, this is a good way to start for cheap.  The seller admits that the car has a significant amount rust, but it should only get faster with each bump in the road as it sheds unnecessary iron bits.
