S52 M3 Swap: 1993 BMW 525iT

BMW wagon owners always complain that BWM didn’t export their best engine/transmission options into their wagons for the US market — and it’s true! The E34 5-series had a V8 and a 6-speed option, but it was never available together on the wagon…perhaps because they assumed wagon owners were family men/women who wanted to just cruise. Anyway, if you want the wagon and you want to have fun, you’ll need to find one that has been modified like this next beast, which is now powered by an E36 M3 drivetrain. Find this 1993 BMW 524iT with S52 inline-6 swap bidding for $5,000 in Burlington, VT via eBay. Tip from Cory.

From the seller:

It’s a 1993 E34 touring with an S52 from an E36 M3 and a 5 speed manual ZF transmission and LSD. The car has been a daily driver, it’s quick, sounds good, runs awesome, and gets compliments everywhere.

Everything works on the car this includes the ac/heat and even the sunroof though I don’t trust it.

Chassis mileage just hit 232, motor has 170. All swap hardware (clutch, master and slave, cooling system, etc) have 10k miles on them. The starter, entire cooling system, guibo, carrier bearing, trans mounts, thrust arms, brakes and power steering system all have under 10k on them.

Motor is out of a ’97 M3, OBD1 conversion with the M50 manifold and a Mike D chip. M5 Bilstein suspension with the SLS deleted – ride is M5 taut, compliant, yet firm. You’ll want to replace the tires and windshield – I considered 17″ wheels to protect the 18″ staggered M Parallels from the Vermont roads. Car was driven from California in 2018 and has never seen winter or salt.

The exterior of the car is in good shape, clear coat is in good shape, the front end has some chips and scratches and the driver’s door has some dings. Hood needs a repaint as the clear is very tired, you can sort of see this in pic in dew/rain from above.

The interior is also in very good shape but shows wear like a good pair of jeans. Creases and scuffs are visible, but I don’t think they detract. Headliner is intact. Driver’s seat twist has been fixed but passenger has not. Extended leather door panels, non airbag dash, correct shift surround.

Noticed rear bumper cover is cracked in the area below license plate. Looks like someone tried too hard to park behind me at some point.
