Riding On A Cloud: 1987 Citroën CXA CX Prestige

Daily Turismo is always on the hunt for the weirdest, most obscure cars and this next kammback designed beauty is definitely one for the books. This French freak is a perfect example of why you shouldn’t trust anything made by the French (except for wine, of course…and cheese…and baguettes but that’s it). The Citroen CX was produced from 1974 to 1991 and was infamous for its peculiar spaceship design and so-called “advanced” technology. The CX Prestige, being the top-of-the-line model, has all the useless extras one could imagine and is powered by a 2.5L fuel-injected engine paired with a 4-speed automatic transmission, but let’s be real, who cares when you’re riding on a hydraulic suspension system that feels like you’re floating on a cloud? Find this 1987 Citroën CXA CX Prestige offered for $18,000 in Menifee, CA via craigslist. Tip from Rock On!

Open the door and you are greeted with a steering while from the Twilight Zone and a smidge of carpet on TOP of the glove box. Pop the hood and you’ll find a spare tire where the engine should be and an engine where the radiator should be.

Limo? Mais non! Looks stretched, doesn’t it?
Hydropneumatic suspension FTW. Every time I drove my green-ball’d Citroen it just always felt like they’d fixed all the potholes, and every trip seemed shorter.
What a privilege to have been able to drive in the time of creative engineering… and other stuff, music especially. Soon all we’ll get is the automotive equivalent of autotune and clicktracks.
I read the wikip article on these CX models. the Prestige name refers to a stretch of 10 inches- 25cm. with that model variant introduced in 1976. also had a raised roofline . all to better serve as a plush ride for those being chauffeured. I remember seeing some of these in Helsinki back in 1981.
Well, that does make a lot more sense. I should read more than the first sentence. Unless that was in the first sentence?
Long wheelbase FTW. I had a W126 SEL with reclining back seats — the seat part actually slid forward, pulling the bottom of the seatback along with it. Front page drive-in news.
It is a shame the Beetle name was already taken. I’d love to ride in one of these some day. Not own, just ride in one.
“$7,500. Invested in service and repairs within the last year.”
I’ll take that as a warning.
Or a challenge!
Perfect car for one of those “Keep Portland Weird” bumper stickers. Always thought Citroens had the strangest steering wheels; wondered if that subject ever came up in front of Elon Musk while ‘Plaid’ was being built? Elon Musk, “You think that is weird, hold my beer” 🙂
