Renegade Hybrid: 1973 Porsche 914 V8

The Porsche 914 was initially designed to fit within Porsche’s lineup below the prestigious 911, simultaneously occupying the top-tier position in Volkswagen and Audi’s range, bearing the Volkswagen emblem. Porsche’s decision-makers were unwilling to take the risk of diluting their brand’s reputation by associating it with the VW nameplate, but they successfully negotiated with VW to market all 914 models exclusively through Porsche’s American dealership network, branding them with the Porsche logo. Despite its initial sluggish performance, the 914 was known for its exhilarating driving experience, thanks to its mid-engine configuration and lightweight design, weighing just 2100 pounds. However, today’s Renegade Hybrid transformed 914 boasts a powerful 350-cubic-inch crate motor, taking its performance to an entirely new level. Signal orange, and European spec tail lights are the best look on a 914, but I would sure like to know a little bit more about the transmission. The 901 transmission certainly won’t handle that engine. A conversion to a four speed at the very least would be a step in the right direction
If the builder used a 911 transaxle then it’s good to go. If not, it’s a transmission grenade.
The car has been running a V-8 engine since 1978. If the transmission hasn’t blown up by now, you should be good to go.
True – in the hands of a sympathetic driver. One hard clutch drop launch by a noob and it’ll be toast, if it’s truly 500hp as the seller claims. My guess is closer to 300hp at best.
On the other hand, I truly like it. An aluminum block LS would be preferred, but this works too.
I’d like to see a 914 frame and tranny handle a 500 HP engine. Uhhuh.Taking the seller at his word, I’m still made nervous and parenthetically I’m not the nervous type, by his use of capital letters and exclamation points and poor grammar. Perhaps he’s elderly. In any event what relationship does the price bear to the vehicle? Asking for a friend.
There is no Frame
All that and it probably overheats as well. Nope.
