This next car comes as a tip from David who writes: Look, run it, don’t run I’m aces either way. But just tell me that’s not actually the air cleaner mounted on what should be the top of the quarter panel. As the proud owner of a ’90 C4 Corvette I’m tempted to get this just to confuse everyone. Yes David, that is a rare optional headrest/aircleaner attached to a single piece Vettish fiberglass body sitting on a Beetle chassis. Wow, that was harder to write than I expected. Find this 1973 Volkswagen Beetle Custom Corvette offered for $1234 in Apopka, FL via fiberbook glassplace.

I am convinced that the first generation Audi TT is going to be a sleeper classic for future appreciation. It won’t be in the next few years, but sometime in the self driving neural networked googlepod future people will start paying decent amount of money for Audi TT Quattros with the upgraded 225 horsepower 1.8T engine and 6-speed manual gearbox. But today’s example is going to be even more desirable because it has the super cool amber leather baseball stitch interior. Find this 2004 Audi TT Quattro 225 HP Baseball Interior Edition bidding for $6950 reserve-not-met with $7995 buy-it-now located in Painesville, OH via eBay.
The 225 horsepower Mk1 Audi TT (type 8N) Quattro was a moderately cool car when released in 1998. It featured sweet Bauhaus styling and is certainly a style icon that will become a collectible classic in 30 years (or so…). Naturally the high horsepower K04 turbo equipped 1.8T version is the one to get, and while it probably makes more sense to get one that is in good running order, this one just needs a clutch and is offered for next to nothing. Find this 2002 Audi TT Quattro 225hp offered for $2000 in Sonoma, CA via craigslist.
The B5 generation Volkswagen Passat had an interesting model lineup during its 1997 through 2005 lifecycle. It started with the basic 1.8T powered 5-spd stripper models that offered a surprisingly fun drive for economy car price and included a turbo-diesel option, but went all the way upmarket to a 4.0 liter W8 powered leather infused […]
Why are we so obsessed with fast street cars? Fast cars like a new Z06/Z07 Vette are fantastic on paper, but are entirely too fast for the average street and too expensive to take out on a track…so what should a gearhead do? Easy — get into autocross, but do it with something interesting/older/slower like […]

The Bauhaus styled mark 1 Audi TT was released in 1998 to instant acclaim and backpats all around the Volkswagen group board rooms. Wait…Volkswagen? Yup, the TT was built on VW’s Group A platform, which means it shares its front-engine front-drive default setup with the Volkswagen Golf and New Beetle, but with a number of […]
Today’s Mid Week Match-Up is a request from tipper Zach who writes: DT commentariat – I am in need of your wise council – It has been requested that we procure a more quiet car, as my wife can’t hear what our daughter is saying from the back seat. Sure, our daughter could speak up […]
The B5 generation Audi A4 was an entry level luxury sedan from Audi designed to compete with BMW 3-series and Mercedes-Benz C-class. By modern standards it is a small entry level sedan (closer to the size of an A3 or BMW 1-series) but it comes with a longitudinal engine/gearbox with three outputs: one on either […]
The B5 generation Passat was launched in the 1997 model year with a product that looked/drove/smelled a lot more like an Audi than the previous generation Passat. In 2001 Volkswagen introduced the B5.5, a cosmetically refreshed version of the platform that added more chrome trim (inside and out) some fancy taillights and a unique W8 […]
