Opal or O-pile? 1974 Opel 1900 Sport Wagon

There have a been a few cars to claim the name “Sport Wagon” over the years, including Buick’s V8 powered SportWagon, and VW’s turbo-hatch SportWagen, but today we’ve got the black sheep of the Sporty-Wagony family…the Opel Sport Wagon. What exactly was sporty about the Opel Ascona A based wagon that was badged as an Opel and sold at Buick dealers on 1974? With a 90 horsepower cam-in-head inline-4, the Sport Wagon was more wagon and less sport, but at least this Opel at a Buick dealer wasn’t a Japanese built Isuzu Gemini. Find this 1974 Opel 1900 Sport Wagon offered for $8,500 in Rocklin, CA via craigslist. Tip from Rock On!

It has only 97K original miles And I am the second owner. I purchased it from the grandson of the original owner About 2 years ago. It has the original 1.9L , 4 cylinder engine And automatic transmission. It has many new parts including water pump, fuel pump, And brake components including front disk brake calipers, And aluminum valve cover from an Opel GT. The body is very straight, with only a few small dings, and decent original paint, no bondo or body damage ever. The interior is also in excellent original condition, no cracks in the dashpad, driver seat shows wear. It starts easily, hot or cold, no smoke or clatter, and cruises at freeway speeds with no problem. I recently added the custom wheels and tires, but I have the original wheels and hubcaps with good tires, as well as a set of Opel GT Wheels . Parts are readily available from Opel GT source , right here in Northern California, usually come the next day! I have CLEAN CA TITLE and current registration, NO SMOG REQUIRED! Autotragic, but almost worth it for the period vibes.
Had one exactly like this, except the one year only 1975 Bosch fuel injected, with 4 speed manual. FI gave perfect starting, idling, drivability. Excellent handling, poor man’s BMW.
Nothing wrong with this wagon that another 200 horsepower or so couldn’t fix.
Remember C&D ShowroomStock in the early 70’s? Was a contender on Dunlop SP4’s.
Rebuild engine to high compression Euro spec, add a later 5 speed, and you’d surprise BMW 2002s.
