Nine, Nine or Six: 2001 Porsche 911

I known I might sound a bit like Jan Brady when I caterwaul “Porsche, Porsche, Porsche, they get all the attention.” But it’s true. The Porsche 911s of all years and conditions have seen mind boggling levels of price inflation in the past few years and it doesn’t seem to make much sense or let up. But for the guy/gal who just wants to drive something rear engined that isn’t super over priced, then you might need to settle for a 996 with a salvage title. Find this 2001 Porsche 911 offered for $17,000 in Palmdale, CA via craigslist.

From the seller:
2001 porsche 911
condition: good
fuel: gas
odometer: 84232
title status: salvage
transmission: manual
2001 911 Carrera
6 speed, runs well, has never leaked a drop.
I have had a few years; used for weekend canyons in southern CA. 20k miles in 3 summers.
Was in the past a development car for Feal Suspension, has adjustable height and dampening as well as interchangeable swift brand springs. Its suspension and ride are setup for spirited street use currently.
Brembo rotors and hawk street performance pads.
Wheels are TSW 18″, Falken Azenis 510 97% new. 245/285

Aftermarket spoiler, intake, exhaust, suspension were all on the car when I purchased it.
I have upgraded/changed brakes, wheels, tires, battery, infotainment.
Interior is in great shape, no rips only wrinkles/creases on seats. Headliner is perfect, dash is perfect.
Head unit changed out for touchscreen carplay and android app compatible unit. Still have all the factory stereo and changer with interior plastics. Car originally had the CD changer and amplifier is still in the nose.
Has canyon rash rock chips along front lip, underside, typical skirt areas etc from being driven in the canyons. Paint and front underplastics have taken the most wear.
Car came from motorsports family to me, also an enthusiast, and has been well maintained as far as expendables and use.
Exhaust has a growl to it but is also CA smog legal.

I’m one of those Rare Germans that has always believed Porsches are ugly, tail-heavy and haven’t been re-styled in 60 years.
Before I bought my current car, I’d considered taking my profit and paying cash for a clean/decent miles 911 that had been well maintained, etc. (sometimes more than other, the phrase “no car payment” can have a nice ring to it). I’m no Porsche expert, though, and only know relative surface level stuff about the brand, IMS bearing issue, etc. Purists frown upon certain years, but I could give a sh!t and this looks like fun/inexpensive option if you can get your head around “rebuilt title”. Hopefully the seller can shed some light on that, but if the haven’t had any issues……..
Before buying, someone would need to have the oil analyzed and cut the filter open, and plan for an IMS update. They might get lucky and end up with an affordable 911!
