Missing In Action: 1992 Oldsmobile Toronado Trofeo

An 80s Oldsmobile, particularly an oddball model like the Toronado Trofeo, is a sight that often triggers the comment “you don’t see them on the road nomore.” This is because the fourth and final generation Toronado, which debuted in 1986 (and was canned in 1992), was built on a smaller unibody E-body platform that it shared with the Buick Riviera and Cadillac Eldorado. The switch to a transverse engine layout and the absence of any available V8 did not escape the attention of traditionalists, but the uniqueness of owning one of these vehicles makes it quite intriguing, especially since it is unlikely that anyone else in your car club has one. Missed opportunity on this. All for sale ads should include a picture of the trunk. They are massive. Also this age of Olds GM had completely nailed interstate spec suspension. You could drive this thing for days munching huge miles and not feel drained in the slightest. It might not be a corner carver, but for contential crossings this would be a great tool.
It’s not just truck space, it was trunk ACCESS that American cars got right in the 1990s. Nowadays, I need an engine hoist (and a jackhammer) to get my luggage into the compact-sport-xtreme-electrimifided-utility-crossover-vehicle that i’ve rented (because, we all know, I don’t own any cars from the past decade).
Owner of a 2012 F150 agrees with your statement. I just remember the trunk of this car can hold more sets of golf clubs than people fitting inside the vehicle.
I wouldn’t throw it out of my garage. But every time I see one I can’t get the jingle from the old Trofeo commercial.

I was so confused as to why someone named David Belafonte was singing in the Harry Belafonte style until the “this isn’t your father’s olds” statement came out! Well played Oldsmobile from 1990. I’m sure with advertisements like that, you’ll be in business for another 100 years.
You didn’t also notice his daughter singing? I hear this song quite often as there is a fellow at work named Dayo!!!
Oh wait………….
Very appealing American car of the period. I do prefer the space age Buick Riv interior over the Trofeo’s though!
This design has aged well considering how it was a little unusual at the time of release. I’m sure it’s aged better than any original owner considering Oldsmobile’s demographic in 1992… they’re probably all dead.
$8000? Someone has a drug problem.
