Mid Week Match-Up: Wild Card
Today’s mid week match-up
is an open post with you, dear reader, helping with the match. That
means I want you guys in the comments to give your car needs — budget,
location, constraints — in the comments, and then folks will reply in a
nested comment to your needs.
What do you need? Comments below.
Need a dog hauler for a 100lb American bull dog, and a 140lb Bull Mastiff. I like English cars or at least old school cars. PNW, 10k max.
Whatcha got?

You are going to stuff a 100lb bull dog and a 140lb Mastiff into a '67 Triumph TR2000? YIKES!
English, room for dogs, under 10k… First thing that popped into my head:

Need a '67. Will consider any make / model (but partial to US cars) as long as it has a back seat, no needs (especially no rust – shipping a clean car to the east coast no problem), and not red (already have the midlife crisis z06 in the garage), and is less than $30k.
5 shoulder belts, able to ascend an icy 20% grade (just snow tires don't work), get better than 30mpg at 70mph, manual and under $6k in the upper midwest. Aside from Subaru, RAV4 CRV and Escape which are ubiquitous here and don't quite get 30mpg, what else is there?
Nothing.
What you have suggested is impossible unless you can find a toyota tercel 4wd from the 80's…closest you can get to your requirements.
The terc won't have five shoulder belts… which is the priority, economy, wall climbing or price?
I'd say this is pretty much checks all the boxes (if you add snow tires):

Saaaaabaru 9-2X?
Oh no, I got this one….
Suzuki SX4
SX4
This video shows it's a much better choice than a Ford Kunga, whatever that is.

Well played, Scott, well played.
I'm costing out shipping a ~600lb crated engine from AK (99501) to IA (52317). Guy on the street pricing from a local logistics outfit was just shy of a grand.
Who should I be talking to?
Call Fedex, UPS, Estes, old dominion.
They all have freight options, not sure if they service alaska. But 1K is about right. You are going a LONG distance and through a different country.
I'm not shipping guru, but I've been lead to believe that a big part of price for freight is the pickup and delivery access. If you can ship it to/from a place with a loading dock and forklift, it should be much cheaper than shipping it to/from a home. Might be cheaper to hire an uber XL…
You should try u-ship.com It is the ebay of shipping things and what the people on the TV show Shipping Wars use to set up transport.
Thanks for the tip – similar parameters gave a 50% savings through the low u-ship bid…
I've been waiting for something like this!
My daughter is about to get her driver's license, so the hunt for her first car is on.
She has 5k to spend, and I would be willing to put another 1k on the pile, but I would also like to get her plates and first year of insurance covered, and possibly have a bit of money aside for a bit of maintenance, should the car need brakes or tires, etc.
She does not quite have her license yet, and we are rolling into a Chicago winter, so I have time to hold out for a lucky break.
First things first – automatic transmissions and a/c are a must. I can repair a/c if needed. When I was a kid, I grew up in an area where we were always running around on something motorized – mini bikes, 3 wheelers, tractors, farm trucks etc. So when I got my license I pretty much knew how to drive. I just needed to learn rules of the road and what not. She barely rode a bike, so she has literally had to learn to drive. So, I just don't want to throw a stick shift into the mix at this point in time. She'll learn eventually, but she may as well get good and comfortable behind the wheel first. These are my must have's. The lower the mileage the better of course, with say…. 130k being my limit, unless the car has had some significant preventative maintenance performed
Her #1, absolute top priority is that the car is any color other than silver. She just thinks there are too many on the road and just doesn't like them. She doesn't even mind charcol that much, or even black, but would prefer a nice white or red, or something just a bit fun.
Her first choice of a car, however, is a VW Beetle – the newer, Golf based, version. In these, I prefer 2006 and newer models, as VW switched to the 2.5L I5, and the quality in general seemed to improve a bit with that redesign. But I would certainly snatch up the older versions if the right deal were to come along. But I don't want the turbo engine. The premium gas these engines want is a full dollar higher around here. That's a significant expense for a kid with a part time job. And I suspect the insurance may be a bit higher. So, the newer 2.5, or 2.0 is the perfered power plant. No convertibles – again, more insurance, more maintenance, and honestly, I don't really want her to have the car everyone perfers to ride in all summer. But I would really, really like her to have a sunroof. Beetles just seem to fun to not be able to open the roof on nice days.
Also on my short list are the non-S Mini Coopers, Mazda 3's, and Scion TC's. Open for other suggestions, but honestly, she's a great kid – She works hard, keeps her grades up, and has never given me the tiniest bit of trouble. So I'm really hoping to find her that Beetle.
So, just on the outside chance that you know someone, or pass one sitting in a driveway in your neighborhood for sale, let's hear about it! If one of those really fantastic deals comes up, I am certainly willing to road trip to pick it up. Especially if it is a car someone here knows the history of or can actually inspect.
So, a bit of a stretch, I know. I've been searching since about June with a few interesting cars popping up here and there, but nothing that has really motivated me to pull the trigger.
Thanks!!
