Looks Good In Red: 1972 Porsche 914 1.7
The Porsche 914 was originally conceived as a dual purpose range topping Volkswagen and low-end Porsche, to replace the Karmann-Ghia and 912, respectively. The initial plan of marketing the 6-cylinder version as Porsche and the 4-cylinder as Volkswagen was eventually canned and lowly 4-banger version got a Porsche crest too — and today, the easiest way to get in a fight with a 914 enthusiast is to call his car a Volkswagen. Instead of picking fights with people who like driving slow cars, why not join them by picking up this 1972 Porsche 914 1.7 offered for $7500 in Mesa, AZ via craigslist. Tip from FuelTruck.

The German interation of late sixties minimum overhang think that inspired the MR2 and the cayman ..
Its shown as an automatic.. I'm wondering if its actually a sportshift?
No, the seller entered the info incorrectly. I had to look closely, but that certainly appears to have a clutch pedal and a manual shifter.
Your eyes are better than mine then as I couldn't find a clutch pedal.
There was a sportomatic option on the 914/6 but I think there were at most 2 cars ever built with it.
All 914 fours have the 901 five speed. This would have the rear shift version , not the side shift version hats came on the 1.8 and 2.0 cars. If you were going to make a 914/6 clone a 1.7 is what you would want to start with, as the bodies and interiors are more or less the same. This car has had at least one bad paint job the trunk should be body color, and there are no photos or mention of the "hell hole" or the longitudinal ondet the cosmetic rocker panels. It also has the dreaded single carb to replace the fuel injection that some mechanic couldn't figure out.
If rust free it's worthwhile but that would be a surprise.
Also the fact that it has aftermarket AC and there are no photos of whatever butchery is in the front trunk is a little concerning.
Not sure I appreciate the price on this one
This is smallest motor option was there not a 1.8 and 2.0 that is the hot one other then the 6 interior looks beat up from the Az Sun-devils never like screw driver's holding clutch pedal or in the way any way…lol Not a good selling point with parts and tools in cabin i agree price is steep for 1.7 motor.
Friend had one of these. If the targa top was removed, you couldn't open both doors at the same time, or the car would sag in the middle enough that the doors wouldn't close properly unless you did a 'lift and close' maneuver. Was still fun to drive though. Felt faster than it was due to the low seating. Price is very steep here.
There's a much better 914 in the LA (Torrance) area on ebay right now, if you can stomach a salvage title.
