Long Live The Manual: 1996 Subaru Outback

Reports of the death of the manual gearbox are a frequent occurrence in the mainstream automotive press, as is death of the internal combustion engine. But I feel that these reports are exaggerated, or at least over-hyped for the savvy used car buyer in the audience…which is all of you guys and gals. I expect that the supply of used manual gearbox cars will continue to delight those in the know for years, even as auto manufacturers tool up to produce elecronic powered self hovering gizmos in the coming decades. Find this 1996 Subaru Outback offered for $3,000 in Santa Rosa, CA via craigslist.

I miss my ’99 Legacy Brighton, a true stripper that won’t break your heart. Who needs electric windows and locks anyway? Its only true defect: an automatic transmission that’s always in the wrong ratio and always a gear short on the highway.

Oh man………REAL MEN shift gears! A MANLY Subie wagon! Sweet spot for the price too……….must stay away from bank!
What do the folks know about the power plant as it creeps up on 200 K mileage? Is it 22R like or a Pinto luminium exploding grenade?
The inquiring mindless want to know

Never understood the fanaticism of the Subaru crowd. The engines blow head gaskets like nothing, clutches, etc. I do like the 02-03 bugeyes WRX, but would pass on nearly anything else from them…
I think that most of what you hear about Subarus blowing up and breaking clutches, etc. is from people who hop them up and thrash them.
Thrashing a stock Subaru seems to do them no harm, especially the non turbo cars.
