Little Red Racer: 2005 Mini Cooper S

I’m not gonna lie — I get hella excited whenever I see an array of Hella lights on the front of a car. It doesn’t matter if it is a 68 Firebird or a 2005 Mini — a set of rally lights really make a statement. But this next car isn’t just a bright face — it also has some performance upgrades to the already tossable Mini product and is offered for a reasonable price. Find this 2005 Mini Cooper S offered for $7995 in San Diego, CA via craigslist.

R52When I bought it, it was totally stock…so, I brought it to the great team at BR
Racing in Los Gatos and spent over $10K in performance mods and tuning. High level description of mods: stock engine was greatly (yet reliably) enhanced with a pulley mod for the super charger, new ignition, coil pack, and plugs. New Bilstein PSS9, adjustable, coil-over suspension all around, camber plates, sway bars, upgraded bushings, OZ Ultraleggera wheels with Continental Extreme tires, 4-point Schroth harness, rear seat delete kit, Hella fog lights with custom fab light bar, and more. The car also has a permanently attached Thule roof rack for your bike, surfboard or roof box. This car runs great and it is a blast to drive and a true go kart with a license plate. The removal of the rear seats lightened the car, and also adds a lot more room for hauling stuff in the back. This mod is totally reversible, but you would need to find rear seats elsewhere – this car does not come with them. The engine, 6 speed transmission, and brakes are all in fine shape. Here is a detailed summary of the mods performed on the BR Racing website: https://www.brrperformance.com/mini-cooper-s-r53-ultimate-commuter-go-kart/Car has a clean title and is registered through July 2023. Interior is clean with heated seats. Exterior paint is clean and vibrant. It has never been crashed, never a collision, never had any damage or body work done at all…no rust, frame is straight, etc. Has always been driven very carefully and precisely

I’m of the opinion that if you are in a crash where a 4 point harness makes a difference , you really should have the submarine/5th belt to avoid hanging yourself or breaking your lower ribs or any of a number of unpleasantnesses.
Actually, 4 point belts and stock adjustable seats with no back brace and the straps sort of attached to the floor and putting pressure on the headrest sliders seem the worst of all worlds. If you adjust it so you can reach the radio or ignition with the belts on, then they are worse than no belts at all. I guess it looks cool but…
Schroth does make a 4pt belt with anti submarine technology:

but I can’t tell if these are them. Regardless, I agree with your other comment about the mounting of these particular harnesses being questionable at best from a safety and comfort standpoint.
I like my R53. Very basic car compared to the computers with wheels running around today. Pretty easy to work on and maintain. I searched for a while and found a SoCal one with low miles, OG owner, and all the paperwork, so i pulled the trigger and bought the car like I seem to like to do which is blind and cheap.
It’s got a good sound system, but I generally prefer the luxurious sounds of the supercharger paired with a JCW exhaust.
Highly recommended for putting a smile on your face.
Yep, some lucky buyer is going to be blasting around town with a big old smile on his or her face after buying this go-kart. We have a convertible S and you just can’t be in a bad mood in that thing. Unless you have to drive 2,000 miles on the highway maybe.
