It’s So Simple: 1963 Buick Special Sedan

The Special returned to the Buick lineup in 1961 after a two year hiatus — but instead of being an entry level full-size, it was now a compact unibody sedan built on GM’s Y-platform. The Buick, Oldsmobile, & Pontiac “senior compacts” shared the same unibody undercarriage, suspension, and aluminum V8, but styling was up to each individual brand. Today’s sedan (I know, it’s the least cool of all the coupe, wagon, convertible, sedan lineup) is basic, but comes in a wicked shade of green and a simple price tag. Find this 1963 Buick Special Sedan offered for $9000 near Liberty, OH via craigslist. Tip from Rock On!

Excellent condition. Drives and runs like new. Original and unrestored. 40,500 actual miles(I drive it often so the miles will go up.Fireball V6 with 2 speed Dual Path automatic transmission. You can putt around town or run 80 down the turnpike. This runs, steers, shifts exactly how it should. Tune up last year.
All fluids have been recently changed–Oil, antifreeze, transmission, differential, brake, and new brake lines. Great tires, brakes, good quiet exhaust.
Completely solid floors, trunk pan and frame. Just had the frame inspected and nh oil undercoated.
The interior is mint and original. I just had seat covers made. Radio works, but needs a new antenna hooked up. Heater blows very hot.
Exterior is in excellent shape. A few very small areas of light surface rust. Some scuffs, no dents.I have put 3k miles on it in a year and would not hesitate to take it across the country. I get compliments everytime I drive it.
The only issues are, battery will drain out every day or 2- I put a battery disconnect on and it’s never an issue as long as I remember to disconnect it.
The brakes stop very good(still the original drum style), but if you have to stop quick, one of the front brake drums will vibrate.
The windshield fluid reservoir leaks so you can’t use the washer fluid. You won’t find another 60 year old car unrestored and in this condition.

I bet that this would be great fun with a dual quad 425 Nailhead in it!
Gotta love Buick for their lack of concern in naming the engine “Fireball”. Yes, there’s the allusion to power, but most people don’t think of a fireball as a controlled explosion.
Imagine the public relations headaches if these cars had any kind of issues with catching on fire. You can bet the lawyers will never let Buick resurrect the Fireball name.
The electrical drain on this bare bones car is a little odd, but also shouldn’t be too hard to track down because there can’t be many culprits. Overall, seems like a winner.
very very good guys.. i love it
Much nicer than the Scamp offered on the same post!
I owned a ’61 Special (hand-me-down from my grandfather–who bought it new) in ’76. Smaller body than the ’63, but the same basic interior and steering wheel!
