Interesting On Paper: 2007 Chevrolet Malibu Maxx SS
“The Chevrolet Malibu Maxx is going to save GM from bankruptcy and disaster” — said nobody in 2007. But the Maxx was an interesting take on the 5-door hatchback-ish wagon that is reminiscent of the Olds Cutlass Aeroback or the Corolla Liftback — both of which came out decades earlier. However, the Malibu Maxx SS added a 3.9 liter LZ9 pushrod V6 to the Malibu chassis for an earth shattering 240 horsepower and 240 ft-lbs of torque mated to a 4-speed slushbox. I remember test driving a non-SS version of the Malibu Maxx back when GM was doing the Auto Show in Motion. I remember it had a lot of body roll and the staff was really yelling at me not to take the sweepers as fast as I was. In retrospect, I’m not sure it had all four wheels on the ground.
Also, I had my then-girlfriend riding in the passenger seat when I did this. Putting up with my antics there was one sign she’s a keeper; we’ve now been married for 15 years.
