Heckflosse of a Deal: 1965 Mercedes-Benz 190D W110

All you get is one photo for this next car. But it has only be posted on craigslist for 22 minutes…so…you’ve got to act quickly and the only thing you know is that it has CA black plates (appear to be original because BKC would be proper for 1965 registration, but they look old and could be part of the CA YOM (year of manufacture) program from a few years ago (check the registration slip for a YOM fee)…or recent CA special interest black plate with custom numbers to look like an old plate…again check reg. But…but…if this is an OG CA black plate Mercedes-Benz it means it has never been out of the state or salvaged titled and it looks like screamin deal. Find this 1965 Mercedes-Benz 190D W110 offered for $2750 in Vallejo, CA via craigslist.

Even with limited info and one photo, it’s probably worth the price, but budget for a lot of replacement parts. I’ve seen some interesting non-Benz engine swaps done with these. If it’s relatively rust-free, it could be a solid foundation for an interesting sleeper.
Regarding the CA black plates, the plate that’s on this car is legit. The letters/numbers are in the correct range for the age of the car and they’re 100% not the new specialty black plates. Those new plates are easy to spot because the spacing between the letters/numbers is very different from the originals, plus the paint is reflective. It looks different.
As for YOM, it’s highly unlikely someone would go to the trouble of sourcing a period-correct set of plates and go through the process to get them assigned to a car they’re practically giving away. The only guys I’ve seen do this process are dealing with restored cars. Usually the plates are restored as well. These don’t look newer than the car. The patina matches.
One last thing, I’m not sure you have to surrender your plates on a salvage title situation. I think you do on a lien sale, but I think I’ve seen original plates on salvage title cars. I’d do the research to verify, but that would require effort and I’m feeling lazy.
Heck, Flossie. youre slower than a manatee in heat! Having had a 65 200 I can say with the authority that comes from experience they are so cool, No quiero diesel, I want to get there before next week. A 3 speed on the floor would work, mine was a column shift. Theres just something about watching that red band go up and down the speedo thats transfixing………like playing pac man …..in a bar circa 1979
I see these and think quality, craftsmanship and engineering. Maybe I should think of getting one.
Then my memory clears and I remember having one in 1968 and struggling to get over the Sepulveda Pass at 30mph. I later put a turbo on it which let me go over the pass at 45. I sold it.
This perfect for me! Work at home and I rarely leave the SFV.
