Heavy Oil Bimmer: 2009 BMW 335d
German diesel cars have been getting a lot of press lately. Unfortunately, it has been for shady goings-on by VW to meet emissions requirements. If you do a little looking around, however, you can find a diesel from Deutschland that might make you change your opinion about the oily stuff for the better. Find this 2009 BMW 335d for sale in Roseville, MN for $13,990 via craigslist.
You may be thinking: Great. Here is another example of a perfectly fine performance car ruined by the insertion of a crummy diesel lump in order to post up high MPG figures. You’d only be partly correct with this assumption, however. Yes, this BMW has great performance in gasoline trim and yes, it does get 23MPG in the city and 36MPG on the highway, but the the story does not end there.
Pull up next to this car at a stop light and the above picture is the view of this car you just might be getting after the light turns green. Why? The 2009 BMW 335d has a turbocharged inline-6 with 265 HP and a big-block-like 425 lb/ft of torque. The result is a 0-60 time in the mid-five second range. It seems that while most other diesel car makers were working on putting tiny mills in tiny cars to eek out every last mile-per-gallon, BMW had other ideas. As it turns out, a heavy-oil powered car can be made to run like a champion and still deliver stellar fuel economy.
You should expect to get a vehicle that has BMW fit and finish, handling and luxury with this example. Also, look to find a car that has the longevity advantages that come with an over-built diesel mill. Now that this 335d is seven years old, you can pick it up for a fraction of sticker and a lot of life left. Taken together, these qualities add up to a bargain for those of us in the market for a great used car.

Nice writeup, Andy. I may need to consider one of these as a replacement for the wife's JSW TDI Fraudwagen, whenever Wolfsburg pays us to take it back.
Fraudwagen, that's good. Ours is the TDI-of-Lies.
This thing is within a few miles of my office — if anyone wants me to go take it for a VERY spirited test drive please let me know. I'll keep my fire suit and helmet ready.

Here's newer 2011 335d with fewer (82k) miles, an extra set of winter wheels/tires and still under the GOLD BMW warranty, if anyone is interested. newyork.craigslist.org/brk/cto/5531561106.html
Branded title = salvage.
Good catch. I was not familiar with the term.
Salvage….what the car is called after a "spirited test drive"
The torque almost has a Tesla, all at once feel. I was able to co-drive across New England to Ontario with a colleague.
It never felt like a "diesel" – smelly clatter boxes that lasted far too long in many cases, unless it was jury-rigged by GM in the 80's then you could count on mot being able to drive very far.
Rode in a 2015 328D this week. It was nice, but not a torquemonster. I was surprised to find it's only a 2.0l 4 cylinder. Same as my TDI Smogwagen. Anyone know if the 335d was available with xdrive?
