Fresh Touring Origination: 1995 Mitsubishi FTO GPX

If this next car is leaving you confused..don’t fret…because if you weren’t a die-hard Gran Turismo video game fan or a JDM-savant, you might never have heard of the Mitsubishi FTO. The FTO was only built in right-hand-drive, so we never got them in North America, but the 2.0 liter MIVEC 24 valve V6 pushed 197 horsepower into the front wheels for a driving experience similar to the Eclipse. But the styling…oh, that was so much better in the FTO. ‘Tis a shame this one has the auto gearbox. Find this 1995 Mitsubishi FTO GPX offered for $10,990 in Burlington, WA via craigslist. This is my personal car. I imported it from Japan. It runs and drives great. Mint condition apart from the window rail trim is cracking. Which is better than expected for a 25 year old car.

This is a lightweight car at 2600lbs. It has beautifully balanced handling, great 90’s looks and a beautiful racing-engine sound from the 2.0L V6 revving all the way to 8,000 rpm. This racing engine really sings thanks to Mitsubishi’s MIVEC variable valve timing system. The 6-spoke wheels fit well and give it a solid stance.
Engine runs great. Pulls hard. Doesn’t burn oil at all. The 6A12 2.0ltr Mivec is a great engine. Belts and oil have been changed. Transmission shifts well in either automatic or manual mode, in all 4 gears. There are no Check engine lights or any error codes. Could be a daily driver, since it is very reliable. I recommend adding some octane-booster to each new tank of premium gas, since the recommended fuel octane is 98 to 100.

Interior is in superb condition. No cracks in any trim or on the dash. Looks great. Small tear on the driver seat bolster. All other seats are in great condition. Aftermarket touchscreen radio unit installed by Japanese owner. Comes with approx 1200 hand picked Japanese songs saved in the memory from previous owner. There are also some interior lights that were added before I owned it. They actually allow you to see the window controls at night. Under-glow lights have been removed.

See a better way to drive something JDM?
GT2…many a sleepless night devoted to that wailing siren. Just…one…more…try…
Gotta admit, I never new the tail end was such a mess. The whole package says baby Supra meets BRZ’ older brother…except the tail. Which says to me TVR in its darker hours. Auto box makes the RHD an easier pill to swallow and-plus!-you can reach mailboxes better when you inevitably start working for Bezos.
You had me until Amazon delivery driver!! Yuck, I can’t imagine a worse fate for this thing…I’d rather see if bashed to pieces in a 24 Hrs of LeMons race!!
Do you remember the PS1 thumb numbness/pain you’d get from holding the accelerator (X button?) for hours on end? I’m sure there is a medical term for that!!
Compression paraesthesia of the first digital nerve, I’m thinking.
Or, as I tend to refer to it, the price of dominance.
What a long ago girlfriend would call an ideal getaway car “ they were in some sort of Toyota, and I swear that a Great Dane was driving it.”
She never explained why her car was painted light blue on one side and dark red on the other, but the dual hand brakes were fun and the switches to control each light individually were just like the way my uncles wired their cars.
Wonder what ever happened to her.
