Forgotten Classic: 1987 Mazda 626 Coupe

The GC generation Mazda 626 (known as the Capella for its home market) was released in 1982 and in a departure from previous rear-drive versions, it was front-engine, front-wheel-drive. The 626 was an attempt by Mazda to go up-market but they didn’t launch their own luxury brand like Lexus/Infiniti/Acura, but they did offer some interesting and sporty coupes. Find this 1987 Mazda 626 Coupe offered for $4650 in Sacramento, CA via craigslist. Tip from Matt V.

Already gone before I could figure out if this had the F2T turbo motor or not, although from the badging, probably not.
Gotta love the 80’s interiors. Akin to hair styles of our youth.
Had an 84 626 LX 5sp. charcoal outside red velour inside. goofy motorized center dash vents. fun stereo with a joystick balance control. these came out at the time of generic labeled foods in the grocery stores. “this product may vary in size and shape but is suitable for everyday use” or similar printed on its plain white label. and that same phrase could have been used to describe the 626 among its peers. the exterior form was so simple and unornamented, it was utterly invisible on the road or in a parking lot. A truly generic sedan. inside, tho. was great. first Standard i had with a cruise control. fabulous million way adjusting driver seat. fully manual. (no wiring harness or motors) i even pulled that seat and bolted it to driver side rails in a 96 subaru with hideous OEM thigh support. made that thing tolerable to drive.
Interesting that you mention the seats because they didn’t look like much, but upon closer inspection they do have a nice back curve and aren’t just flat boards. The headrests are groovy. My fav seats of all time are the Recaros that come stock in an 04-era Subaru STi. Those were simply the best.
