Florence’s Long Roof- 1987 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera Brougham Wagon
The Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera was a 1980’s fwd shrunken equivalent of near any 60’s or 70’s GM car. These cars had a relatively long model run from 1982-1996 and were available as a coupe, sedan, and wagon. Everything on the interior would have been very familiar to any senior citizen from the column shifter to the ribbon speedometer to the flat seats. In keeping with tradition, the Ciera had a optional Brougham package which fitted today’s wagon with vinyl wood grain trim all over. The conservative approach was rounded out with 14″ whitewall tires along with wire wheel hubcaps. All of these niceties were catnip for traditional GM drivers. From the seller:
I am the second owner of this beauty. The first owner, Florence, passed away at 92 yrs of age and this car stayed in her garage for 25 years. She only drove it to Sunday Church. Upon her death, I purchased the car and have driven this car the past two years from my Stamford home to the Stamford Train Station. It’s been a great local get around car. But don’t get me wrong, the engine is great. I would easily drive this long distance. Have done a couple trips to Boston and back with ease.
This wagon has a V6 and weighs 3,500lbs. It rides like a motor boat! It’s been well maintained and recently got new struts, shocks, brakes. The tires will need to be replaced within the next 10,000 miles. Interior has received a new ceiling header, lock cylinders, driver side window switch and a passenger seat belt.
Insurance is dirt cheap on this 31yr old vehicle. Less than $20 per month. Gas mileage is good; gets almost 30mpg
Fluids need to be topped-off on a regular basis. The engine purrrs like a kitten but the gaskets are drying up a bit.
It kills me to sell off this vehicle. Every time I drive her I receive a compliment. However, I’m getting divorced and this sale is unfortunately necessary.
The details provided by the seller seemed to pose more questions than answers. These come to my mind:
- How exactly does a car ride like a motorboat?
- What fluids are in need of topping off and which gaskets are bad?
- What is the age of the person/people who provide the compliments on this car?
- What car could possibly replace this Ciera? K-car?

Cory is looking forward to a good weather weekend to work on the Mercedes C36.
I drove a Buick Century wagon and an Olds 98 Brougham from this era when I was in HS. Motorboat perfectly describes how these drive in that you really pilot one of these and when you hit the gas, it really feels like the front lifts up like a boat. Definitely prone to under-steer and tire squeal. I drove a friends a few years ago and the nostalgia was incredibly powerful.
Any longroof catches my attention. This has appeal on several fronts. 8-passengers in a mid-sized package. $5K feels like strong money, but the condition looks impressive. 90K miles of driving to church on Sundays? I suppose that is only 3-4K miles a year over 25 years, or about 70 miles a week.
This is an attractive alternative to a Roadmaster, if you want something more reasonably sized and don't mind a FWD V6 setup.
