Update 8:30AM: We have gotten an overwhelming response for this car and it looks like it is going to a previous owner. More updates later.
Update 9:15AM: This car has been sold to a nice lady located in Albuquerque, NM who is a previous owner. She is pretty sure she left something in it that many years ago and wants to get it back.
Update 9:16AM: The car is back on the market as DT Private Reserve Exclusive Cellar Submission Top Shelf (TM, PDQ). The lady in Albuquerque was searching for her virginity that she is pretty sure she lost in the back seat of this SL, but she couldn’t find it. The wheels have been rotated (by loading
and unloading it from the trailer) and the car is said to turnover
when sufficient torque is supplied to the frame. With this new
attention, the price is now…$10,000,000.
How long had you been looking for this car before you bought it and then decided to sell it a month later?
I’ve been searching for R121 SL Mercs since my Dad had one when I was growing up in West Berlin. He used to use it for a quasi-legal Peking duck smuggling enterprise that was very lucrative. The East Germans loved authentic Chinese cuisine but because of a mistake in the communist customs documentation –specifically the translation of the Chinese word for maltobiose (malt sugar) was confused with the word for electronic calculator– Peking duck was illegal in East Berlin. Anyway, my Dad who had diplomatic passes would drive the family through a number of gates in the Berlin wall with the trunk positively stuffed with freshly roasted Peking ducks. To this day I cannot see a 190SL without smelling the sweet aroma of Peking duck and gasoline.
Without using the word patina, describe the body condition:
It is covered with a fine…pattern…of wear. It could use some reconditioning, a complete restoration, some touch up paint and boot polish, or be driven as is. The best part about buying a car in this condition is that the methods and end result (i.e. FUN!) is left to the new buyer.
Does the engine run well enough to overpower friction in the seized brakes?
Not at this time, but it probably needs a new battery and maybe clean out the carbs. I’m sure it’ll fire right up after having sat for 30 years, but I didn’t touch it because of arachnophobia and a congenital heart condition.
Have any of the Kardashians, Kennedys or K-Fed ever OD’d in this car?
The tears in the seat seams strongly suggest that several Kardashians have been in this car, but I don’t have any solid proof…but…like the restoration…the fun of researching this car’s history will be…included in the sale price.
Do you belong to any country clubs or own a vacation home in the Hamptons?
No, but I have been twice investigated by the SEC and once indicted for wire fraud by a federal grand jury, but — knock on aged mahogany — no convictions.

This is an amazing opportunity for anyone looking for an R121 with factory phallic trailer hitch. I recall being driven to boarding school in Tanzania in one of these cars as a young lad.
Incedible find! Not only do I know P d'A, I rode with him in that car from the 1971 Montreux Rose D'or to Geneve via the old highway along the lake shore. That trailer hitch was incredibly handy as it allowed us to put a rented tow bar on a co-ed's broken BMW 700 convertible that we towed into Geneve for repairs. She was ever so grateful and that little Merc performed flawlessly. A little more rust now than I recall (it had two headlights back then) but then I suspect that co-ed's headlights are probably looking a little rough these days too.
Man, DTPR you guys are ON it today! The market for these early 190s is taking off like a Mercedes CLR-GT1 on the Mulsanne. Get in while you still can. Despite the patina, this one looks just like the one I drove from Montreux to Paris after the Jazz Festival in '94. BTW, stopped for incredible sushi in Lausanne, can't remember the name of the place but Holy Wasabi!
