DT Birthday Celebration: Welcome PhilBot
“It takes discipline not to let social media steal your time.” –Alexis Ohanian, Reddit Founder and CEO.
DT Editor Vince: “I am the first to admit that I don’t understand this newfangled social media, the facebook, this tweeting thing, instahash, pee-interest — none of it makes any sense to me.” Posting links to DT stories on facebook has been easy enough, but the twitter bot is really pointless…and something had to change. Thankfully, at least one person on the DT team isn’t an aging neanderthal is up to speed on social media and has graciously offered to manage these channels, our own PhiLOL.
What you can expect to see is an increased human touch on our twitter and facebook pages, and some exclusive content keep the kids happy. Perhaps you will also see us on Instagram, Pinterest or Tinder, who knows — when in doubt, swipe right!
Okay, I guess I'll actually have to start using twitter now.
Facebook I leave to my wife and her pictures of whatever she's eating.
As for Tinder, love you guys, but not in that way, if you get what I mean…
Rats. Another left swipe.
Sinister, or dexter? Sinister, or dexter? Eenie, meenie, minie…

Congrats, PhiLOL. I'm looking forward to more on the FB page.
I deleted my FB account a year or so ago. My dog still has his. I will have to ask him if he will start following the DT FB page and let me look at it once in a while.

Dang, I have been waiting for this whole Social Media thing to blow over. Now I am going to feel like I might be missing something over there.
I hear that condition is called FoMO (fear of missing out). Well, I am going one better: I suffer from Fear of Missing Other's Car Observations (FoMoCo). Apparently I have suffered from it since birth. I think it is genetic: I got it from my Old Man, who may have been Patient Zero. He caught it from a Model T.
B, I believe that's actually a very accurate description and observation on your part, one I'm sure encouraged by the social media purveyors. I only know FB but my conclusion after working extremely hard at it for years is that those platforms are amazing, it's just that users chose to utilize (or not, as the case may be) them in dreadful ways. Some argue that people are actually incapable of positive utilization but I don't believe that. Often, users are pleasant in person and raging firstletterofthealphabet+spaceintheground…s in social media.
In my opinion (look Ma, no acronyms…I can actually write a bloody word!), they're best for keeping contact with family and as marketing tools for most kinds of businesses. All other uses are invariably awful, insulting, anti-social (which makes me wonder about calling it "social media" in the first place) and most people shouldn't be allowed on them. They can't or won't (your choice) use them in a positive or even at the very least, an interesting manner.
The kicker is that users don't even realize how jerky they're being. Is that intentional? I don't think so, in most cases. But if a "friend" treated you like everybody does on social media, you wouldn't be friends with that person for very long. In fact, you'd want to punch them right in the vomeronasal organ, repeatedly and with vigor.

That's so cool that your dad was Patient T. You should fly that flag proudly. 😉
Forced to weigh in by my own intemperate nature, I say this.
While I enjoy the absolute hell out of DT and I recognize perhaps the commercial imperatives of having a presence across internet platforms, and given that it is your own efforts that would be required, I have nothing but venomous contempt for social media. Its crack for the mental midget. An unending stream of garbage to read that means nothing and matters even less. Most times you wouldn't sit in a room and listen to the prattling nitwits that occupy most of the social" commentariat" on almost ANY social media platform.I
I sure dont care what they think, what they eat, what they look like or what they think and feel. I just hope DT does'nt dilute its essential anarchic spirit attempting to fit in to the mass moronic world of useless irrelevant blatherings by the unwashed know nothings. I feel better now……gotta find some of those little green pills.
Fear not, Woodie Man. We've been on facebook since 6 days after the DT site itself started, in 2012. It won't change us, we're just getting better.
phew …………
