Diesel Rabbit Pickup: 1981 Volkswagen Caddy

Few cars are slower than a vintage Rabbit Diesel, trust me, I sold the one I owned about a decade ago and seller still hasn’t gotten home. Anyway, the Diesel passenger version of the Rabbit was noticeably slower with a passenger or four, but I can’t imagine how slow this Caddy would be with a bed loaded up with gravel, lumber, or cabbage. Find this 1981 Volkswagen Caddy offered for $3,500 in Livingston, NJ via craigslist. Tip from Cory.

Johnny: You know, my VW caddy is really really slow.
Ed: How slow is it?
Johnny: It’s so slow it’s being overtaken by rust.
Bobby Rosengarden: Rim shot.
I am currently trying to work out whether I WANT to buy a car from someone called calm Ivan, or DON’T WANT to buy a car from someone called calm Ivan.
wondering if “calm Ivan” is a reference to Soviet submarine captains in cold war times. American sub sailors following Soviet subs would have to deal with “crazy Ivans”, a series of random turns/maneuvers pulled by the Russian subs to expose possible US subs tailing them. this bit of navy jargon made its way into pop culture in the film- Hunt for Red October. dont think Sean Connery or Alec Baldwin had any sorts of VWs in that movie, though.
That “hasn’t gotten home yet” joke was a good one!
