Das Pony: 1984 Mercury Capri RS

The Mercury Capri followed the career arc of any modern pop diva singing prodigy — think Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan, or Miley Cyrus.  A cute and compact version (1970-1977 German Ford) for the first few years gives way to a meatier and more aggressive second generation (1979-1986 Fox Body) followed by a complete and total disaster (1991-1994 Mazda front-drive convertible). Stick to the middle years before the breakdown to shaved head insanity…like this 1984 Mercury Capri RS  here on eBay bidding for $4,995 reserve-not-met with $7,395 buy-it-now located in Torrance, CA.

The 2nd generation Mercury Capri (1976-1986) was a variant of the
Fox-body Mustang and shared many body parts, glass, mechanical
components and just about everything under the Mercury specific sheet
metal. If you skipped the Cologne built V6 and funky TRX wheels you could get a Fox Mustang with a cool badge for a bit more cash than a base GT Mustang…how’d they even sell a single one of these things when new is a mystery to me!

Powering the Foxpri is Ford’s 5.0 liter V8, which sucks air through a
4-barrel carburetor and produces 175 horsepower and 245 ft-lbs of
torque.  This one has the desirably 5-speed manual gearbox, which will
make your time in the Capri much more enjoyable.
