Daily Offering: 1980 Mercedes-Benz 450SLC R107
I’m not a Luddite…well…not a complete Luddite, but I’m not as keen on hopping on the latest app based bandwagon as the next guy for sure. But I’ve got a young neighbor who I saw selling a used frying pan to another millennial via a service called offerup. A used frying pan. Well…who am I to get in the way of progress, so I Find this 1980 Mercedes-Benz 450SLC Coupe offered for $5500 in Los Angeles, CA via offerup.

1980 Mercedes Benz 450SLC. Run excellent. Nice interior leather seats. Nice wood. Just tuned up, new oil,brakes, all rotors,…Can be used as daily car. Only needs battery.
My biggest beef with platforms like offerup and facebash marketploosh is that the sellers are often using their phones and offer scant details to the condition of their item for sale. It’s fine for a frying pan. One used frying pan; wonton indelibly baked onto the surface. But a car…well..it needs more than a simple description typed in on a phone. You need to include solid details that’ll help a buyer decide to contact you.

“Only needs a battery” says it all. If the seller won’t spend $100-150 on a battery to sell the car, how much do you figure he spent to maintain the car during ownership? Very little.
I fell victim to this with a VW once. Had to go to the auto parts store to get a battery before I could drive it home because the battery in the car was on loan from the seller’s other car. That was the beginning of an avalanche of repair costs. Eventually, the car became one of my favorites. But it was a long and painful journey.
I do really like these SLCs, but they make my bank account poop its pants in fear.
SLC = spendy little coupe.
Mega, thumbs up for battery comment. My thoughts exactly. There was maintenance done so why not pop another $100 for battery ?
I’ve been keeping one eye open for a pre-76 C107 (so as to avoid Cali smog I inspection) but nothing decent has popped up. If my plans of relocation come through I’d by the nicest c107 which cannot pass smog in California to take with me.
It is entirely possible I am in the process of becoming or already am a cranky old man. I recently listed a car on Offer Up. All of the people messaged me asking for my cell # to text me. Mind you Offer Up is a phone app so using the messenger on the app is zero different to texting. Any time I messaged saying happy to answer any questions, crickets back….
Back in 1980 I actually found an earlier model, a ’77 I think, for a woman who owned an antique store. She had an antique ring that I wanted to give the girlfriend. She gave me the ring for finding the car. I think the ring was about a grand. Anyway some years later I saw her and apparently there had been a considerable amount of rust on the car……….and it was a California car.so………….. Still have the girlfriend but recently misplaced the ring………..so the circle is complete.
