Cool Little Runner: 1986 Nissan Pulsar NX

The N12 Nissan Pulsar (1982-1986) was a front-drive little compact that was the predecessor to the wicked Sportbak configurable wagon/convertible/shootingbrake thing. The early Pulsars didn’t have the cool configurable roof design, but they did have one of the coolest grills on a car ever made. That car is so ’80s, inside and out – the grid graphics and logos on the seats are the crowning touch. If I had that car, I would feel compelled to crank up a Genesis mix tape all the time while driving it and find a set of Jams shorts.
I wonder if any Vaporwave vs Outrun hipsters will weigh in on this?
Considering how homely, nay butt-ugly the Sentra was at that time, this was positively handsome in comparison. I got excited recently when one just like this appeared on a local used car lot. It was definitely a 50 footer as what I found on closer inspection sent me packing.
I’m holding out for a NX2000.
My senior drill sergeant at basic had one of these. None of us knew it until this tiny-ass Nissan pulled up one dark morning while we marched to the PT field and that oh-so-familiar voice started barking at us from within. It was probably the first time I’d had a good, from-the-gut laugh in weeks. I don’t remember how many push ups he made me do, but I didn’t care… Totally worth the price of admission watching him squeeze his 6’3″(at least) built-like-an-offensive-lineman self out of/back into that tiny thing.
That back seat reminds me of some women in art school who commuted in one of these. One of them had serious pre-army Elvis hair and sat in the back seat. There was always this smeary spot on the rear window.
