In 1976 GM used the Seville name on a standalone model that was the smallest and most expensive car in the Cadillac lineup. Cadillac product managers had noticed an encroaching threat from European luxury cars that were smaller than a high-end American luxury boat (think BMW 6-series, Jaguar E-type/XK, versus a Lincoln Continental or Cadillac DeVille). The new Seville was small and fancy, but it was even fancier in the radical Seville Opera Coupe version that was coach built by Grandeur Motor Car Company. Neoclassical styling included a chopped roof, fake spare tires, a Rolls-style grill, an aircraft carrier sized hood, and a thin rear window in the vinyl top.
