The SL-Class Mercedes-Benz roadster has been a good looking 2-seater since it was launched in 1954. It was (and is) the go-to car for the rich man/woman who wants a balance between performance and style to lean towards style…but the AMG option (first released in 1995) turns the dial back towards the performance end of the spectrum. The R230 generation of the SL (2001-2011) was available in SL55 AMG trim that pushed 493 horsepower and 516 ft-lbs of torque from a supercharged V8 into a 5-speed automatic gearbox. Find this 2004 Mercedes-Benz SL55 AMG offered for $13,000 in Evansville, IN via faceplace marketbook. Tip from Jeff.
I fully acknowledge my love of the BMW 3-series for everyday driven late model cars. And typically, I recommend people search for a used and abused M3 in their price range to get the best bang for the buck because BMW puts so much more love into their ///M models…but…BUT…sometimes the most basic barebones BMW 3-series is the best because who needs all those gadgets and turbos and flappy-paddle-gear-changers and things anyway. All you really need to have fun an a 3-series is a magnesium-alloy engine block and a 6-speed manual gearbox. Find this 2007 BMW 328i offered for $9800 in La Verne, CA via craigslist.
I hate to contribute to the general panic around the coronavirus…but like the 50th person jumping into a dogpile, I feel only a small pang of regret in my gut. Or is that the coronavirus? Lack of smell and pangs in your gut? I gotta google this. Hang on….nope, I’m good. Anyway, if you are […]
The Subaru BRZ /Toyota 86 /Scion FR-S was the fruit of an arrangement between Subaru and Toyota to produce a world class 2+2 sports car for the masses. It offered an interesting combination of Subaru flat-4 power and Toyota mechanical bits…but was assembled at Subaru’s Gunma plant in Japan. Sales in the US market for […]
If you are a car guy and have never enjoyed the Robert De Niro and Jean Reno classic Ronin (1998) you need to schedule yourself a few hours and pick up a copy on Amazon. The D2 generation Audi S8 was the feature car that was driven in anger by Skipp Sudduth’s nerdy hacker/driver character who insists on getting a custom nitrous system and then hauls the giant sedan through small cobblestone covered French streets. It is fantastic — and you can watch one of the S8 scenes in a clip on youtube here. After watching Ronin a few times, you’ll get the kind of itch that only an all-wheel-drive V8 powered Audi can solve…and this next one is a bit janky, but it does have a manual gearbox swapped in from another Audi. Find this 2001 Audi S8 Quattro offered for $6800 near Minneapolis, MN. Tip from Cory.
The 225 horsepower Mk1 Audi TT (type 8N) Quattro was a moderately cool car when released in 1998. It featured sweet Bauhaus styling and is certainly a style icon that will become a collectible classic in 30 years (or so…). Naturally the high horsepower K04 turbo equipped 1.8T version is the one to get, and while it probably makes more sense to get one that is in good running order, this one just needs a clutch and is offered for next to nothing. Find this 2002 Audi TT Quattro 225hp offered for $2000 in Sonoma, CA via craigslist.
Mother Teresa (aka Saint Teresa of Calcutta) was well known for her views espousing the benefits of suffering. Now I’m okay with as much suffering as the next guy…but..you know…sometimes my left knee aches a bit, and then there was that time I waited in line at the DMV for what must have been a century (before I paid for AAA so that I didn’t have to wait in line..) but I sorta think the guy or gal who drives this car every day to work has got to be eligible for a plenary indulgences or at least a few years off purgatory. Anyway, I’m going to end this little soliloquy/diatribe with my favorite Mother Teresa quote with relation to modern electric cars: “I have come to realize more and more that the greatest disease and the greatest suffering is to be unwanted, unloved, uncared for, to be shunned by everybody, to be just nobody.” Find this 2016 BMW i3 offered for $19,900 in Flagstaff, AZ via craigslist. In case you live under a rock (and YES, i do understand living under a rock with all the scary stuff out in the big wide world…this next thing being a case in point…anywho) there is this festival of drugs and debauchery out in the Nevada desert that is called Burning Man…but should probably be […]
The W202 generation Mercedes-Benz C-class was launched in North America for the 1994 model year with a few basic inline four & six cylinder engines. In 1995 the AMG modified C36 hit the showrooms, but the final (and fastest) spec was the V8 C43 released in 1998. Unfortunately for long roof fans, all W202 headed for North America were sedan versions and we didn’t get the cool wagon version…so you’ll have to find an immigrant like this next one. Find this 1999 Mercedes-Benz C43 AMG Wagon here on eBay offered for $13,900 buy-it-now located in Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada. Tip from Cory.
As a nice change of pace, today we decided to feature another car that appears like it doesn’t need to be disinfected, serviced, repaired, straightened, de-scuzzified, or otherwise un-DB’d. This 2007 Subaru WRX looks sweet as a stocker in black and has managed to avoid the HellaFlush stanced-out scene so far. The seller wants $14,500 and it’s traveled 83,500 miles. That’s 17 cents per mile! Too good to be true? Grab a surfboard and a machaca burrito, and go see for yourself in Oceanside, CA (via cragslist).
