Car Car: 1969 Volkswagen Triumph Kit Car

I was eating some kind of meal replacement bar the other day that I found in my pantry and I mentioned to someone “this isn’t bad, but it is sorta like eating something created by someone who had never eaten, but only read about it”. It isn’t an experience that I would recommend, but it wasn’t as bad as eating moldy guacamole, but this next car seems the analogous car experience. This car looks and drives like a creation built by someone who had only read words about cars and never seen or driven one. Find this 1969 Volkswagen Triumph Kit Car offered for $5,000 in Kew Gardens, NY via Facemeta Brobook. Tip from Cory who describes this thing as “one of the stranger things that you will see- some sort of kit car that is actually pretty well done“.

Despite the ample opportunities to make fun of the ad this looks remarkably well done.
The open hood shot reveals an interesting gas tank and what looks like a Triumph frame.
I think this is the first time I’ve seen what the SCCA describes as a door on a road registered car.
Definitely worth rolling the dice at $5000. It had to cost way more than that to build. Even if it’s terrible, it looks like fun.
Looks like a crossbreed of a Lamborghini and a Citicar. But for such a dubious idea, it’s incredibly well executed.
“sorta like eating something created by someone who had never eaten, but only read about it”.
I’ve often heard that said about Citroens, that somehow they gathered together designers and engineers that had never seen a car and gave them a list of things that it needed to do in a series of phone calls.
I think that since Pierre Michelin became the chairman of Citroën early in 1935, they were probably given a pile of tires with a note suggesting their use. Otherwise they probably would have made cars on legs walking around like the house of Baba Yaga or an imperial AT-AT.
Imagine a Citroen with this running (!) gear
