Bus Camino: 1978 Volkswagen Type 2 Transporter

If you had told me 20 years ago that a rusted-out Volkswagen Bus that had been turned into an El Camino would be worth more than $10k, I would have laughed. If it were more than $2k, I would have at least given a mild chuckle. But the amount of cash that a used/abused ex-hippie van demands these days (or daze) is sensational, mind-blowing, and downright beguiling. C’est la VW. Find this 1978 Volkswagen Type 2 Transporter offered for $13,500 in Eagan, MN via craigslist.

1978 Type II Transporter. Previous owner provided the modifications. He was a welder by trade and modified rear end for truck bed. Back door fully functional. Slider fully functional. Really must see to truly appreciate this bus. Lived most of life in Rapid City SD.

Bus was originally AC equipped. Still has mechanicals underneath.

2.0L engine, professionally rebuilt with approximately 100 miles on it. Full/complete rebuild. I have the receipt for engine rebuild. Weber 32/36 carb. New throw out bearing and clutch. 4spd transmission gear oil changed. New fuel lines, fuel filters and fuel pump. Engine runs strong. All mechanicals and electrical works and runs as it should.

Tires in front and rear are new in August (2023). Front discs and rear shoe brakes are good, ~80%.

All floors are solid. Exterior solid except for driver side wheel well, front (see pictures). Interior is complete; front seats, rear seat, middle 2/3 seat, floor mats, headliner, door cards. Front seats have been swapped out for more comfortable captain buckets. Have original seats.

Rear trailer hitch (2″) has been added for bike racks. Side running board has been added by sliding door.

This is a clean, well cared for bus.

Cash sale. Local pick up. Title clean in my name.
