Built V6 Thing: 1984 Chevrolet Chevette

This next car has a shockingly optimistic asking price for a Chevette that wasn’t owned by Elvis — but it might have enough added value with its custom built engine…oh..wait, its got a 4.3 V6? Yikes. Not sure I’d drop this much coin on a V6 powered Chevette, but it is still an interesting build. Find this 1984 Chevrolet Chevette offered for $23,000 in Batavia, OH via craigslist. Tip from FuelTruck.

Saw the cheap plastic “race” seats and “No corners cut”, and my first thought was, “Yeah, right.” Then I got to the engine specs – even with that price tag, I didn’t see a NASCAR Baby Grand motor coming.
I wouldn’t part with that much for a ‘vette. But That engine sounds bad ass.
The whole point of building a sleeper is the sleeper aesthetic. Bright red with a high rise hood and Corvette wheels? Not sleepy. Also, nothing says “cut corners” like those Pep Boys gauges screwed to the bottom of the dash.
This one isn’t what I’d call a sleeper, just more of an effort to find a find the lightest body shell and cram the most power into it that you can.
My fetish for sleepers distorts how I view modified cheap-o cars. From my perspective this is lipstick on a pig, but I see how someone else could look at a Chevette and see a blank slate for a fast car. I guess.
Maybe.
I was seeing an entirely different saying about hogs, myself: “You can’t make a race horse out of a pig, but you can make a very fast pig.”
There is a true sleeper Chevette out there in the net-land. It’s black, has steelie wheels and hubcaps, stock interior, no hood scoop…….and a built 427 big block with L-88 heads. Anything off idle threatened to break out the tires and lift up the front end.
Is it just me or are those wheels on backwards???
