Brown Box Classic: 1985 Plymouth Reliant
Back in the early 1980s, Chrysler’s survival hinged on a new family of compact front‑drive sedans and coupes called the K‑Cars. Built on the L platform, the Plymouth Reliant helped save the company by delivering decent fuel economy, bench‑seat comfort, and a no‑nonsense boxy style. Today, most K‑Cars have long since returned to the earth, but there are still a few survivors out there to remind us of a time when cupholders were optional and fake woodgrain was a big selling point. This brown 1985 Plymouth Reliant two‑door coupe shows only about 100k miles on the odometer and looks shockingly clean for a 40‑year‑old econobox. It even wears a matching tan interior and sports its original hubcaps. The lady does not come with the car. Making an assumption here, but could you imagine going from a K car to a 3 series?
L platform was the Omni / Horizon. Not really related to the K platform used here.
Still, this one is amazingly clean. Although if I bought it I would probably be looking for a rear ended PT Cruiser with the 2.4 Turbo, or seeing if the early 2000s Eclipse V6 will bolt in with 3.0 minivan parts….
I feel a lot of love for this. If it were in the Midwest, I’d buy it just for the nostalgia. Had an ’82 as a winter beater…no options. None. It was 5 years old when I bought it and it refused to die. Ten years later I finally gave it away to someone in need.

I had the wagon version of this car on Maui in the 90s. Engine just turned off one day driving on Hana Highway from Paia to Kahalui. Rolled onto a side street in Speckelsville. After a few trips back and forth hitchhiking to the parts store, discovered it was the timing belt had stripped its teeth. Luckily it was a non-interference engine, and not complicated to change out. Did it right there on the street a day or two later and kept the K-car rolling a while longer.
